700 lift kit
#1
I am looking for advice on lifting my 700. I am dying to lift it and put 28 inch 589s on it, on the stock rims. I saw one post where a guy said not to because of all the strain it puts on the drivetrain, and screws up the driveline angles. I see a lot of lifted 500 SPs, and they don't appear to have any problems. I have owned a few lifted trucks so I'm very familiar with driveline angle problems and drivetrain strength. However, I can't figure out how to get 3/4 ton axles under my sportsman. Seriously though, I don't know if the stock drivetrain is strong enough for the increased weight and leverage of the lift and big tires. I don't want to start breaking expensive things, but 17 inches of ground clearance sounds pretty cool. Any thoughts or experiences will be appreciated.

Whoa!! that, my friend is absolutely cooler than cool. I saw one on the Highlifter website, but the picture was from the front, and it didn't look quite that big. I wonder what that has for lift and tires? I thought the looked like Goodyear Mudrunners, but I couldn't be sure. My monitor is too small. I couldn't find any info there about it, I think the site was under construction, all I could check out was the homepage. It obviously had aftermarket wheels, I bet they are wider. Do you think it would be real tippy and unstable up that high?

Because I am a mud addict, and I want every bit of ground clearance and gnarly tread I can get. I found out that my Scrambler (naturally) is much more stable, but I don't think the 700 is necessarily unstable. The IRS just handles certain things differently. I climbed the wifes Scrambler over a fallen tree for her, then got back on the 700 and tried and turned it over on top of myself. Almost went down an embankment that would have wrecked the machine and myself, but it stopped at the edge with no damage. ( bruised the hell out of my leg) Anyway, I am aware of it's rollover angle now. I want a lift but I don't want to be rolling over every five minutes. I do a lot of mudding, but I don't want to ruin the 700 for other kinds of trail riding.

Hey northstar where are you doing your muddin? I'm in Derry, NH and we're finding great deep mud spots off the Rockingham Trail System and off the power lines in Derry. Have also been off the power lines in Raymond. Just wondering if we're riding the same places or if you know of others.

We travel all over, but usually we go to the Rockingham trail from Fremont and ride as far as Sandown. Then we pick up the powerlines trail and head west toward Derry. We can go all the way to route 102, but shortly after crossing it the trail is closed. A friend talked to the landowner who said he closed it because some A#$hole kids on sport quads went under the fence and chased his cows, then when he went out there they buzzed him. We used to be able to get all the way to Burger King in Derry from here. We explored a little of the powerlines toward Manchester, but now we can't get over there from here. The rec trail itself really bites, and everything on the north end is posted. The Fremont Police Dept now has a Grizzly 660 with radar, and they are out every weekend writing tickets on the rec trail and the side trails. Remember, everywhere you go that isn't a state or club trail, you have to have written landowner permission, even if no one is complaining. If you go to the Fremont end of the rec trail you can no longer go to the store for gas and snacks. They will give you a $60 ticket and possibly tow your machine.
So, whereabouts are you riding from there?

We have a neighborhood group of about 16 ATV’s. We have trail access to the Rockingham Trail System from the neighborhood. We know about the trail closing, but the landowner is going to reopen it soon. We have taken those power lines as far as the Manchester Airport, before the landowner shut his land down. We sometimes just trailer (like we are tomorrow) to a spot after the trail closure and ride from there. If you guys are ever interested in riding with us, drop me an email. You’re would be more than welcome. We usually try to leave in the AM and spend about 6-7 hours riding. Some of us have mud tires, some chose the less aggressive path, but all are welcome…plus you don’t have to worry about getting a ticket in Fremont because the parking lot is full!
