Scrambler tranny

I recently got a 99 Scrambler 400 4x4. I love everything about it except for one thing. When going down hills, the transmission does not gear down. If you're off the gas, the only way to slow down is to use the brakes. Is this normal? Would a clutch kit help this? Anything else that would cure this problem? I'm used to having gears and being able to downshift to slow me down. I test drove an 02 Scrambler 500 4x4, and from what I remember, it seemd to gear down when you let off the throttle.

Welcome to the world of Polaris! All you can do is learn to love it the way it is or you can put in an EBS system for about $500 or you can change secondary springs that let it back shift differant.I used a blue Aaen secondary spring and it helped a little.

Check out HPD's new catalog, they have a new clutch from a company called team something, the version with the engine braking really does work, a guy from here moto crosses a HPD frame quad with that clutch in it. doesnt need to use the brakes.

You can slow the Scrambler down by barely giving it gas. This will cause the clutch to grab the belt and the engine will then hold the quad from going any faster. If you don't touch the throttle, the tranny and tires will free spin and go faster and faster.

I have noticed the same thing PolarisPower500 talked about, keping the belts engaged by giving it a little throttle every now and then. And yes, you can put the EBS kit on it or maybe mess with springs, but before you spend a lot of money on all that, keep in mind that replacing brake pads occasionally is relatively cheap in comparison.

I've tried hitting the throttle a little - it doesn't seem to help. Maybe I have some weak springs. I was kind of hesitant on using the brakes. When I go down steep hills, I used to shift into a low gear and let the engine pull me down and I'd hit the rear brake as needed to slow me down. With the Polaris single brake system, I thought it may lock the front up too much going down hills. That's why I was looking for some engine braking. How does the Polaris brake setup work on hills? Does it transfer the power to the rear wheels when going down hills and the front wheels if you need to stop going up a hill? Again, I really love this quad compared to my Wolverine - the handling and power is superb. If I could work out the braking and downshifting, it would be the ultimate machine for me.

Go with an EBS or roller setup. I can run the trails at 50mph and get over a year out of brake pads. Instant backshift is a great addition. The Team series clutches are available at HPD and Hot Seat. These two with the addition of Aaen offer roller clutches.
