My 2001 trail boss's engine started missing after going thru a small water hole. After a few seconds of revving the engine the miss went away. This happened again when I went back thru the same water hole. The water was not deep but with some speed it did make a pretty good splash. I did go thru a few more water holes during the day but the engine ran fine. Why did the engine start to miss? This has never happened to me before. I have went thru some serious water holes in the past with no problems. Any feedback would be apprecaited!

Maybe going thru the puddle fast caused some steam to get inhaled by the engine?Just a thought.

I just surfed over here to post the water problem I'm having. It seems similar to yours. See the topic "Scrambler still bogging in water".

It's hard to say what the problem could be. I was having problems on my bike when I started waterproofing it. The best way to find out is too start it up and get out the water hose. Start hosing it down in different spots and when it sputters, you just found your problem. Good luck.

I had the same problem with my scrambler the last trip out while running through a creek. It seems to be a problem with water getting around the spark plug and plug wire area. I beleive the plug and the wire are getting wet and shorting out to the head. Im going to check the plug wire for cracks and attempt to water proof it somehow and hopefully this will stop the miss

Get some dialelectric grease from the auto parts store. Just fill the boot with it and you won't have any more problems.

MGM,

Long time no see. How's it going lately? You back into riding again? I've got my cv joints holding up right now.........maybe I can break one this weekend.......lol (I sure hope not). Anyway, did you ever get your joints made into gorilla joints?

hey waylan, I haven't been riding in about 5 months now. It'll probably be a while before I can go again. I'm starting to go through withdrawl. I've been too busy working 85-90 hours a week to do anything. How's your bike in the mud now? I bet that thing does awesome. Have you broke any cv's yet?

I've broken one lower and one upper. The first run of internals in the lower were stock, and they're replaced now with gorilla parts. The upper break was due to taking the axles apart and putting them back together a bunch of times. We had a little problem getting welds on the axle extensions to hold up, but it's working great right now. CV Joints plus has been great with service. We ran into some problems along the way, and they have been really good to me. I guess you would expect that kind of service for $700 big ones, but you never really know what to expect after any sale.

My next mod is to gear the front lower by removing the tranny. I emailed you not long ago, but I'm not sure what I put in there. Here's the latest: You can change out the 16/14 sprockets inside the tranny with 15/15 (I believe from a scrammy), and lower the final gear ratio to the front by 12.5%. This will still give you a 4% overrun by the rear with 11/42. If you run 12/42, you will have a 12% overrun. If you run 13/42, you will have a 19% overrun. I would really like to find more gearing options for inside the tranny, but the 15/15 is all I've found. If you decide to do this, keep in mind that the 15/15 sprockets aren't the same. One is 26T internally splined, and the other is 22T internally splined. This is why you can't simply swap out the 16/14, which comes stock in the xplorers. If you want, I could give part #'s. Well, I've rambled enough. Later,

Waylan

You are really trying to tweak that bike to get the most out of it. Are you having problems turning the tires? Have you gotten it stuck yet? I'd never really thought about changing the gearing in the tranny to get more power. I thought I had a lot of time in my bike. I can't imagine how many hours you've got into yours.
