Temp sensor "switch" went out on mine @ excactly 1 year old. $50

If you hear the gritty sound coming from your fan, get ready to spend $150. When mine started doing this, it lasted another 6-8hrs, then died completely. I took it apart and it was FULL of mud. That output bearing DOES NOT seal out everything. I do quite a bit of water riding and my SP400 only had 75hrs when the fan was replaced.

Well, I just had a local auto electric shop check out my fan and they said it works flawlessly, so I guess it's my sensor. Time to spend $20 on a new sensor.

brent,

I should have elaborated more in an earlier post, but I was short on time. My first fan quit on me one day. It had been running rough beforehand. I found a replacement wholesale, and replaced the fan. I took apart the original fan, and there was crud inside the motor as well as the bearing. My second motor started making the rough sound, so I replaced it. Upon taking it apart, it was immaculate inside the motor.......water had just penetrated the outer seal on the bearing. Now, my 3rd motor is sounding rough, but I'm just going to run it. It has been sounding like this for about 4 months, but runs fine, so it must be just the bearing. I tried to replace the bearing on both the first and second fans with no luck. Apparently I distorted the housing when pulling the bearing out, and it wouldn't work when I got it back together. So, the seals on the bearing don't always keep everything out, but for me, 2 out of 3 is more than 50%.

you are not going to mess the charging system up like the guy said. i have been doing this for years on my expediton and my sportsman 500. no problem at all. this works great because you can just run it all the time until you come to some water. you can hook it up where you can still use your senser and still turn on the switch when you want to. but you are not going to mess up your charging system

we just replaced the fan on my brothers 01 500 last weekend. the exact replacement at the dealer retailed for $207.00. wow we went to the the local auto zone and got a universal 10" fan for $49.00. had to drill 4 new holes in the plastic to mount it. the original is a 9" but the 10" fits ok you might have to trim a little plastic off the shroud. the old fan ran a lot the new one runs only a short time. also even though we hose out the radiators after each ride from the front the radiator was packed pretty good on the back side. and whats the diff if you run a fan continuosly or the headlights continuosly?? however at night time it would be a strain on the charging system.
