Hello all:

First of all, I am extremely new at this, so please be gentle in your responses. I am not very experienced with ATV's, but understand most concepts.

I have a Trailboss, that had clutch kit, new muffler, and carb jet alteration (Not sure of the extent of each, however it seems to be a fairly common procedure). I did not do these alterations, the previous owner did.

ANYWAY - I am having a couple of problems that hopefully someone can help with. First of all, these problems all start after the engine gets hot, and has been running for a little while.

I guess I can adjust the carb, and lean it out a little (how hard is it to access the carb settings on a 4-wheeler?), if you guys think that will solve my problem.

Please let me know what you guys think.

    Thanks in advance!

When the previous owner changed the jets he didn't use the right ones. The 2001 Trail Boss doesn't have any air-fuel adjustment screws so you will more than likely have to change the jets. I can't tell you which jets you should use though. I'm sure someone here can give you more useful info. than me. I do know for sure that there are no external adjustment screws on the carb.

Stuckinmud, you are wrong, there is an air/fuel mix screw located on the bottom of the carb. You have to take the carb off to see it. Milkman00, for your jetting problem, it sounds like your main jet is too large. Hard to tell without knowing what main is in there right now. Rejetting a carb on a Trailboss is a REAL treat. I have been there and done that. I have a White Bros E-series muffler, K&N filter and air box mods. I run a .150 main with the air fuel screw out 1.5 turns from the stock position, and it runs like a raped ape.

P.S. You didn't mention the year of your Boss. 250's a 2 stroke, 325's a 4 stroke. The above mentioned was done to a 325.

    Well lovely

Is it hard to get the carb out of these things???

ALSO - I wanted to adjust the idle a little. I opened the box attached to the throttle on the handlebars, and I didn't really see an adjustment there, but I did notice a electrical contact connected to two wires, and it seems to stall the ATV when those touch. What is that about???

It's an electrical "system" to cut the power to the bike if the throttle cable sticks. My die maker buddy laughed when he saw the execution/tolerances of these things.
The carb is a royal pain in the you-know-where to get out. Practically have to rip the whole front of the bike off...Sounds like you'll have to do it though.
You should describe what your silencer looks like. Depending on whose kit it might have been (RCR?), that might be willing to lend some technical assistance (proper jet size, whatnot). Also where thereany holes drilled into your airbox lid. Maybe your not sucking enough air for the jet/silencer combo? RCR provides these little rubber grommet thingys and instructions on where to put em with his kit, if they weren't put in...
There is an extenal idle speed adjustment screw on the side of the carb. Squat down there and you'll see it.

Hey arhcer, can you adjust the air-fuel mixture while the carb is on the quad or do yu have to take the carb off? Seems the engineers should have made this mixture screw a little easier to see and get to huh?
Hey milkman, sorry for the wrong info! Looks like this archer knows what he's talking about.
As for the idle adjustment is concerned you can get to that rather easily by looking at the left side of the quad just above the belt cover. You will see a thumb screw there. Just make sure you don't jack the idle up to high or you will flat spot the belt.

Stuckinmud, You would probably have to take the carb off to adjust the air/fuel mix screw. It is located on the bottom of the carb, and it is up inside of like a round aluminum nozzle. Working on Polaris carbs are a pain in the neck, but it can be done. Take off the gas tank and bingo, there it is. Milkman00, Please provide more info about your Boss, such as the year and the cc's so we can narrow down the fix for you. Does it have air box mods(holes drilled in it)? I have the RCR Stage 1 kit on mine and it runs like a champ.

I will see about giving you guys the rest of the info you are asking for, but unless I am missing something, isn't the rest of the information the subject of this thread???

    2001 Trailboss 325???

Perhaps I missed something (which is sooooo possible! ) I can tell you it was built in Feb / 2001.

I will see about getting you the other info... As for the air intake - these holes that you are talking about - are they supposed to be in the cover for the box that holds the air filter??? Let me know if that is what you need. I will also see about getting any other information mentioned previously.

Thanks for everyones help! Much appreciated for this newbie

Yes, if you have two holes drilled in the back of the airbox lid? Also, try and give us a discription of the muffler also. I hope I can help you out and get you running with the big dogs.
