Hey, I have a 2002 500 4x4 Ill tell you about it, I don't think there are any changes from 02 to 03. Back is chain front is shaft, which is fine because when you want the sport side youll use the rear chain in 2wd mode and when you need more traction it will be nasty stuff like deep mud so you will want a shaft drive for the front. Shaft is easier to clean and maintain but less sporty. So they way they have it set up is well. As far as the 400ex thats in great debate and depends on the riding I think overall the 400 ex is a faster machine not by much but If you do heavy mud or real nasty stuff the 4x4 may make a diffrence. if your strickly MX then go with the 400ex. The scramblers are also more comfortable for longer rides. if you ge teh scrambler get a clutch kit, it will make a ton of diffrence and shorten the gap between teh ex and the scrambler alot.

I have a 2002 scrambler and it is great. I did not want a true utility quad or a true sports quad. I think the scrambler is the perfect blend. It is the fastest 4x4 out there. It has tons of power also. The only thing that would be cool if it had low range. That would probably add more weight though. My wife and I went up to Hurley WI a couple of weeks ago and I went thru alot of mud with no problem. If we get another quad it would will probably get a sportsman 500. I don't know if the new 600 will be a good tradeoff with all the extra weight it has.

Are they reliable?

Yes, however they do require maintenance, such as changing the hub fluid every once in a while, greasing the zerks, and of course adjusting the chain.

Which is shaft and which is chain?

Front: Shaft
Rear: Chain
This is a good combo. Older Scrambler 4x4's had three chains, a front, middle, and rear. Talk about a nightmare! They ditched that concept and went with the shaft/chain combo. Works well.

How often do you have to adjust the chain(s)?

It depends on how hard and how often you ride. It's not any more frequent than any other chain drive quad.

Which chain would be the best?

I still go with the stock chain and sprockets from the dealer. I don't think it's worth spending more money than you have to. I never had a problem with the stock chain. Polaris parts are not as expensive as other brands from what I saw.

Hows the maintaince on a scram 500 4x4?

Not bad. Just keep it greased and don't beat the sh*t out of it and you shouldn't have too many head aches. Remember, change your hub fluid frequently if you go in mud and water a lot.

How do they do in drags against 400ex's?

In a drag, the 400ex would win(stock vs stock).
