Sand..... You can beat ANY Polaris machine... Thats a BOLD statement out of a high-strung 2wd 2-stroke....
I take it that you only mean in your conditions.. MX, sand, or any type of drag racing?... See.. thats where you don't understand Polaris..
Just sit back and look at the ratio of how many pure race machines are sold vs. the amount of big utility machines and sport utility machines that are sold...
So, WHY enter into a market that has very little profit and high production costs???
I mean.. you are saying it yourself, you own a machine thats over a decade old... Have you bought a new machine every couple years to keep the pure race market going???? so do most pro racers... they dont use factory machines that are produced today?.. They build "one offs" out of Aftermarket parts...
Anyway.. if you are really thinking you can beat my overweight, "rubber band" driven Polaris thru this small water hole out at the local riding spot here.. I'll give ya the dang thing.... Then you can go sell it and buy yourself a couple more top ends and carburetors for your antique.!!

SandDraggin,
I really hate to burst your bubble on the race history of the 250R, but here goes. The Honda TRX250R hasn't won a race in years. Those machines that you see on the track have about as much in common with the 250R as a stock Ford Taurus has with a Winston Cup (stock?) car.
Second, the belt and the clutches ARE THE PRIMARY TRANSMISSION ON A POLARIS. The secondary transmission is the part in which reverse and neutral are accessed via the shifter, a sub- transmission if you will. Trust me I own two, I know what I'm talking about.
As far as out running one, in some cases you may be right, but I can think of one area you'll never out run even the slowest Polaris. REVERSE! The interesting thing about Polaris machines is they will go just as fast backwards as forwards.
I've never bashed Honda. I've pointed out flaws before, but never bashed them. I think they are reliable. Although for the most part they're somewhat slow, you can practically use them as a backstop for shooting, and then ride them away afterwards. I don't think that Polaris is even remotely as reliable as most Hondas (although I've never had any trouble with either of my Polaris quads).
I just hope you don't drag race against a built Polaris like my 400 someday. You're liable to get served a slice of humble pie. The auto shifting tranny works wonders for drag racing. Although they are heavier (by about 200 or so lbs), they can be made to run like the devil. But as my dad used to say, "different strokes for different folks". Personally, I still think you under estimate the automatic transmission, as do most people who haven't really ridden them a lot, but I can live with it.

Sprint,
That post gave a tremendous contribution to the discussion. I think everyone appreciated it. It's such an intelligent thing to say...
However there's one thing that I can't seem to figure out. Why are you in a thread with so many guys which are out of their minds ? Are you feeling sick too ?
Anyway I own a 99 Sport 400 2wd and ride with lots of guys in Polaris. I've never had a problem neither have heard of any particular problem with my friends quads.
Now I wonder why does anyone bother answering you, including me.

Well so far,I cant find enough good things to say about my 00 400cc 4x4 Xplorer. This thing is a super climber to.I like it more than my 99 Sportsman.I can really feel the 110lbs of extra weight on the Sportsman to.Im not going to mud the hell out of this one like I did the Sportsman.I cant think of a Honda out there that I'd rather have over it.====BILL

To back up what Mike Chero said about the auto tranny. Think about this. The tranny is the same one used in snowmobiles. Now, SandDragon, you live here in Maine, so I know you must have been to some sled drags. You ever notice how hard and fast them boys take off? You can do the exact same thing to the tranny on a Polaris. Now you are probably thinking, "yeah, but they have up to 1000cc engines." But the Snow Cross machines are all 440. Not a lot bigger then the Sport 400. Watch them boys fly around the track and tell me an auto ain't worth crap.

I'm not getting in on this one, but Lurch, I do know something about cvts. Anyway the 440 snow-x sleds make in the neiborhood of 100hp stock, which is triple what the 400cc single cylinder atv engine makes. And thats STOCK! Secondly the reason drag sleds launch so hard , has more to do with the amount of picks they use in the track. Two hundred studs, on ice equals zero track spin on take off. Imagion an atv that wouldn't spin its tires on the take off, that would be awsome! By the way Lurch, I live right next door. I was wondering if you know of any good atv trails "down Maine"? Please let me know.

I have said what I have to say I don't want to argue about my machine can beat your machine thing any more. It all boils down to who likes to ride what, your own prefence. I just like hondas and you guys like polaris, thats fine. Later all.

Sport400,
Did enjoy your response, I must say I also no longer have a Honda, found a better (for my needs)unit called Traxter (I can hear the laughter)that works great for me.
I am the first to say all ATVs have some great features, but they also have some less than great features. IF it fits, use it.
Enjoy
