Ticking in Scrambler 500
#1
on the wednesday before last i washed our quads (lightly modified '02 honda 250ex, '01 Scrambler 500 with K&N Oil Filter). when i started the Scrambler 500, there was a ticking noise. puzzled by the noise, i revved it slightly and the ticking was still there nd seemed to go along with the revving.i revved even higher and it went away. after riding again this past wednesday, my dad also heard the ticking. he bought it used and doesnt remember how many hours it had on it when he bought it. it has roughly 19 hours on it since he bought it. i suspect that the valves need to be adjusted.i dont think it could be anything major because the guy who sold it to us is a good friend of my dad's and kept the thing running better than new. up to this point the scrambler has been running fine. being that you guys deal with alot of problems and maintenance, do you guys think the valves need to be adjusted? any help would be appreciated

Learn to live with it. Mine has been checked out for its 25 hour and 50 hour and I had valve adjustments on both. They said they couldnt find a problem or damage. My friend's 250 EX has to be tore down because of a similar problem except its tearing his engine apart. He also rides 20 hours a week. Sometimes it ticks, sometimes it doesnt.

my 250ex runs fine. we dont ride 20 hours a week, we've ridden 20-25 hours since last December. are you sure it isn't hurting the engine? the reason i ask is because it HAS NEVER done it before until last week.go figure

never washed/shootting water on engine when HOT after riding it,cold water on the cylinder (especially 2 stroke) can't make failures/weakness to the piston and motor compounds, let it cool a while before washed it up,that maybe yours thick problem, but a tried my father sportsman 500 h.o. (same engine as scrambler 500)and they tend to have that type of sound, fuji engines are very efficient motors...

My scrambler was also making a noise like that and it sounded like it was coming from near the pull starter. I turned it off and pull started it and noise went away, happens sometimes and that takes care of it everytime. I don't know if this helps but it was worth a shot.
