I know that when towing with my SP500 to use Low Range. But when trail riding with some hills speeds from 5mph to 30mph what range should I use recently I shreaded a belt no big deal its easy to change. But to avoid it happening again should I just stop before attempting a hill or going thru a slow section and select low range. Any good advice I thank you for in Advance. Been riding for a while but I admit Im still new to Polaris.

super, I ride in low range while in the woods and while pulling, if I hit an open trail in the woods I'll throw it in high but otherwise I stay in low. The woods I ride are mostly hills and hollers so keep that in mind.

Hey Sup! I just bought 2 2000 SP500s (my wife wanted one too) Anyway, I try to remember to stay in low range up to about 20 MPH, anything much over that and I shift into high range. I wish you could go from lo to hi without stopping. I was trying to pull a stuck honda out a couple of weeks ago and the belt started smoking, but it's still holding. I went ahead and bought a spare in case this one dies on me. Good luck!

Speaking of changing belts, how do you put on a new belt? My friend has a '94 polaris 400 4x4 and he needs a new belt and I wanted to know if we could just fix it or if it had to be taken to a dealer. Does the belt fit over the pulleys in the clutch easily or is there some special easier way to slip it on. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I learned the hard way on the Sportsman.I also figured because it was a 500cc engine that it would power up to anything, however, the engine is not the main issue here. How tight you can make that belt grab is more important than engine CCs when pulling, towing or climbing moderate to steep hills. You can power the Sportsman with 1000cc engine,if it wont grab ahold of the belt properly, the larger motor will do you no good.In very slow technical trails, mudding,or hill climbing, play it safe,USE LOW.====BILL

just remember when in doubt put it in low...that is what my dealer preaches and he says he has guys that have 2 to 3000 miles on the same new belt.

My friends just want me to come along to pull them out
