1.)hows it handle and jump?(not racing, just aggressive trail riding)
2.)stock v.s. stock how does it do in a drag race against a 400ex and a warrior?
3.)is it reliable?
4.)does it respond well to mods?
5.)what is the best pipe and clutch setup for most horsepower?(HPD, FMF, HotSeat, RCR, Dynoport, AAEN)?

ne other comments would be appreciated as well.

thanks,
mark

1.It handles O.K. but not the greatest unless you spend some money on aftermarket shocks etc.. Mine jumps really good with great landings. But I ride mostly in the dunes so it would probably be rougher on hard pack.
2.I have beat all warriors I have raced and have beat stock 400 ex's and have also beat modded ex's. I can tie my brother in law in a 100 yard race on his stock Raptor. But the longer the race the more he pulls away.
3. I have had great luck with my quad. Just do the maintenance and it will take care of you.
4. It responds extremely well to mods. I have the HPD trail pipe with the RCR air box mod with a Boyesen Rad Valve and an FMF silencer with a Primary clutch spring change.

I agree 100% with duneaholic, although bad landings can produce a cracked tranny case. Make sure you have a chain tensioner.

1.Mine seam to handle very well,I like my the ride of my 2000 MUCH MUCH better than the 99 due to the softer ride and extra 2" rear travel.
One thing to keep in mind these machines are heavy. So they don't handle like the lighter THROW EM AROUND kind of bikes.
2.Drag race? Well in stock form I could hang Nose to Tail on a 400EX and could outrun Warrior and 300EX all day.
3. I would say very reliable. Like every machine it requires regular Maintanance. Grease everything and clean the airfilter often, The more you do the maintainance the longer it will last trouble free (bottom line)
4. Extreamly well.
5. Who is the best, there is a lot of us that would like to know, Unfortunatly No one has tested our machines to find out what is the best. Once in a while you will see a magazine put on a FMF or DG Pipe, but never anything from the true polaris performance people. You will probably hear lots of different suggestions (mainly HPD HPD HPD), the best suggestion anyone can TRUTHFULLY give you is go with those who know polaris (HPD,HSP,AAEN,or RCR). And lastly, Stick with one, They make there own products to work with there own products. You will not be let down.

bubascrambler,-how do you like that hot seat speed kit on your 400? is it a noticeable improvement? also did you notice a better gain in top speed? and what does that pipe sound like, is it really loud like a piped dirt bike, or does it sound like sh*t?

1.) It doesn't handle very well in really agressive situations when comparing it to the smaller sport quads, but it handles great compared to the Utes. Though I never had trouble keeping up with my buddies on Banshee's, Warrior's, and 300ex's and we always road pretty agressively.

As for Jumping, if you don't hit MX jumps you'll be okay. It goes off of the jumps great because of the Clutch system...very easy to keep the front end up...It does kinda land like a rock though unless you have a nice downhill ramp. I had mine up to about 6' or so a couple of times...didn't hurt anything.

2.) It has no problems beating Warriors in a drag and on top end as well. From the seat of the pants feel I think it would take a 400ex off the line, but the further you go the ex would catch up. A lightly modded (Pipe and clutched) Scrammy 400 would do better, but the EX would still be faster up top. Unfortunatly if you throw some corners into the race it would be hard to compare them (not dissing the Polaris, just not what it was made for).

3.) I never had a single problem with mine other than a little piece that connects the shifting linkage to the tranny. It broke on a trail, but since it starts in gear it was okay. It was a $4 part and I replaced it and never had a problem.

4.) They respond VERY well to mods...There are a lot of things to choose from too. It would take much to get one to where it could smoke piped Banshee's (probably like $800 or a little more).

5.) Probably the concesious would be HPD but most all of the pipes are good. I had an RcR and I was very happy with it.

Mojave02

Over all I am very satified with the Hot Seat Pipe, I like the Adjustability for little more low or high end. A pipe & Clutching seem to be the Bigest NOTICEABLE thing you can do to a 400 (Adds about 10hp)

As far as the sound the Hot Seat muffler was too loud for me (and not USF approved) I put a FMF turbine core 2 and it sounded good, not to loud and still had that dirt bike tone. I have now gave this bike to my wife and put the STOCK muffler back on, Put the FMF on the 99. As far as the pipe it is much more TINGEE than the stock unit. The AAEN top end pipe it worse.

1. it handles pretty good, it jumps allright not very nimble in the air and the landings are fine as long as you land the rear tires first. 2. when mine was stock it was very close to a 400 in a drag, it also beat modded warriors. 3. I haven't had any reliability trouble as long as you grease it, clean the air-filter, and adjust the chain it shouldn't give you any problems 4. it responds extremely well to mods. 5. I would say HPD it's worked well for me

For those of you upgrading to pipes, those who already have one, you can easily quiet them down. Some don't like to do this....but some neighbors sure appreciate it when you do. HPD sells a pipe quieting kit...it's simple, but effective. This kit is especially effective on the new style ATV8 race-pipe. I think my readings up front dropped a full 9 db. I'm even running a few of them on the outside of the silencer, and that helped things 2-3 db. Louder ISN'T better, quieter keeps riding areas open longer.

There's that soapbox again.

Mark, like all the folks said, pipe/clutch kit are the best wake-ups. The sky is the limit. They're a very fun, muli-function machine.
