I currently have a sportsman 500.I want something more sporty and faster.I don't know if a pure sport quad would be good because I ride with a lot of 4x4's plus ride a lot in the snow also.My question is how reliableand care free have some of your scramblers been?I'm looking at new 400x's any advise would be appreciated! Thanks

Well, the previous post, so eloquently put as it was, should not scare you away from the Scrambler. I have had mine for 7 months. I've put over 1500 miles on it in that time. I absolutely love my machine. It does everything I need it to. I've ridden it in a foot of snow, when machines like the 400ex and z-400 had to follow in my trails. (Actually happened, not knocking them) So alot of it depends on what you are looking for. I love the ride. I do not jump or need to do wheelies, so the weight is no bother. It is plenty fast. For my taste, I don't like the smaller sport quads. I rode the z400. I don't see the draw, JUST FOR ME!! I would recommend the Scrambler any time.

Scott

p.s. not ONE problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

eb,

If you are looking for a used Scrambler 500 4x4, PM me or E-mail me at sulldog15@aol.com. I'm looking to get a Predator next summer (2004 model). Since we're both in Ohio, let me know.

Anyways, the Scramblers are AWESOME trail quads. When the trails get tough, the Scramblers are ready. I love mine. I just watch the guys on sport quads wishing I could jump and what not. I don't even wanna try jumping the Scrambler. It's an awesome hill climber and a fast trail quad.

I own a '99 Scrambler 500 4x4 and I really don't know if another quad could ever suit my needs as well as this one does. I rode it at Little Sahara sand dunes and hung right with the 400EXs I was with. I jumped with them and flew just as high. Then of course I take it mudding, where the 400EXs are useless. I even had it floating once in a lake with no troubles. I only have a little 'gaurd' on my belt exhaust duct. No wet belts for me.
I put a new 700 belt on and it hooks up like never before. Wheelies are easy and the weight doesn't bother me.
Most of the time I wish it had more weight, like the Sportsman. Last weekend we burned brush in a field. There was a large cedar tree that we needed to move but it was hung up under some more brush. I chained the utility 4x4... my Scrambler, to the tree. I took off in 4x4 and it stopped and spun. I moved up in the saddle and my friend got on the back for weight. We took off again and spun a little but it dragged that tree out with power to spare. The only reason I see for a low gear is to go really slow with a heavy load. I love how one gear does anything.
I bought it used in December and there have been no problems.

I guess I have had different experiences than some other people here. I ride in Colorado all winter in the (light) snow we get. The snow here is light and melts after a few days because of the constant sun, so most of the time in the winter I'm riding in between 0 and 10 inches of snow. I used to have a Scrambler 400 4x4 and a 300ex (my son's), and found that the 300ex could always (95% of the time) get through the same amount of snow that the Scrambler could. The ground clearance isn't any higher on a Scrambler than a 300ex, so it gets stuck in the snow when the frame starts dragging. The 300ex frame would start dragging about the same time, but it's light weight made up for the fact that it only had two wheel drive. After I noticed this, I spent the rest of the day kind of testing the difference between a sport ATV and the Scrambler. I sold my Scrambler and bought a Raptor the next week. I now have a Raptor (mine) and a 400ex (son's), and we ride all winter up to about 10 inches of snow. In my mind, the Scrambler is a great dual purpose ATV, but is not really a sport ATV, and not really a utility ATV. I'm thinking that I might sell one of the sport ATV's and get a sporty/utility 4x4 with ground clearance (like a Suzuki Vinson). The thing that makes it hard to decide is that around here you can get used Scrambler 500 4x4 for a LOT less money than something new (about $4000 for a 2000 or a 2001).
Good luck with what ever you decide.

Thanks for all the replies, they are very helpful. As far as trading or buying a used quad,I dont think I 'll go that route because if I get something other than a 4x4 it'll be a pure sport, probably a KFX 400 unless I decide I don't need reverse then it'll definately be a Predator!I'm going to put the sportsman 500 up for sale first but if I can't get close to 4000 out of it I'll just keep it.THANKS!

My Scrambler never broke. It's not totally about that either. The Z will KILL it, but that's not the entire picture. It's not nearly as good of a quad. The main gripe I have is with the front struts breaking wrists and the lack of handling, even in the woods. Is it fun in the mud? Yes. Can you make it pretty fast? Yes. Can you do much better? YES.
