1st oil change
#1
I seem to remember reading a post in here somewhere about having to take your polaris back to the dealer to have the 1st oil change done in order to avoid warranty problems. I didn't see this in the owner's manual. Did I overlook it? If I change the oil myself, will that void the warranty?

When I got my first set of 4wheelers from my local Polaris dealer they told me that they would do the first oil change and also told me for future oil changes that I must use Polaris oil or it would void warranty. I personaly don't know how exactly they would know if you used their oil or not, especially if it was in there very long. On my second set nothing was ever said about who should change it or what type of oil to use. I have gotten to know the dealer pretty well and I beleive that they may say to you to avoid having someone mess it up by not doing it correctly (not that there is that much to it) while it is still under warranty...Definitely cheaper to change oil than new motor. I don't see that legally they could require that you use them as long is it was done correctly using a similar product.
Also, I am no mechanic or an expert on oil..I changed my own oil and use the expensive synthetic Polaris oil and mine are out of warranty...
Since we are on the subject..Is there any synthetic oil out there that is comprable to the Polaris oil just at a cheaper price?

I too am looking for an alternative to Polaris Oil. Am using a semi-synthetic oil, but changing every 50 hours or so. Also using a cheaper than Polaris oil filter, from Walmart, but I think a more frequent oil change will prevent any damage. The Fram Ph 6607 has been shut down by other users, but since I am changing my oii more frequently, I don't think it will be a problem.

Oh yea, while we are on the topic of oil and filters. While at the local walmart I started looking thru all the oil filters that were in the smaller boxes, trying to compare one to the fram 6607,I found a fram ph7317. It looks the same as the 6607, except it's longer. It's the same diameter, looks like the same thread, and the treaded part is "dished in" to permit sealing.
Cross-referance numbers for this one are:

You can probably find a FRAM to fit a Polaris.. But know this.. FRAM filters are as bout as good as a piece of chicken wire for straining your oil... They are worthless at actually cleaing oil..
Juat food for thought...
WIX might make one for it...Or maybe a Delco..

I changed my oil and put in AMSOIL 0w40 and a AMSOIL filter. It is full synthetic and is a very good oil. It cost me around 5.00 and quart and 10.00 for the filter. You cant put a price on good oil and filter. Go to AMSOIL.COM and read about it, i think you will like it!!

The oil issue should be Ok if a synthetic oil with the same viscosity is used. I have heard good things about Amsoil and Mobil 1. I personnally use the Polaris oil in my Sportsman.
The oil filter issue should be anayzed more carefully. Fram filters are LOW quality filters with WIX being the best on the market (NAPA is made by WIX).
Also, NAPA oil (ie 10W-30W) is made by Valvoline.
