I was wondering what all of you Polaris owners thought of racing a Scrambler in a hare scramble. A local dealer has offered to sponsor me by letting me use one. Any opinions or advice would be great! The race is this Sunday and I have never even really ridden a Scrambler. I have Friday and Saturday to get used to it.

A Scrambler 400 with some mods will rock in a scramble. Very stable,quick,and the automatic is great for those kind of races.

 

I have no idea if it is a 400 or 500. I don't know if it's modified either. He told me he has like three, and he didn't specify. I obviously need to call and find out what I'm in for. I didn't care much when he offered today because I was just glad I'd have something to race. I'll keep that in mind, though. If I had a choice between a 400 or 500 what would you go with?

 

Neither is all that good stock, so if they're all stock, it won't matter much. the 500 has more torque but is heavy (so I'd prefer the 400). If the 400 is piped take it.

Try to stay with stock tires. lots of people put holeshots on these and then the back won't want to slide. The x-bars on the side make them hook and with the auto tranny that's a bad combo for aggreive turns. If you can try to get wheels with some positive offset to widen its stance a bit. Both machines are very top heavy feeling and that can be mitigated with a wider wheel base.

Get a 400,pipe it clutch kit it, and DON'T widen it. They are already beyond the optimum limit at the stock stance. For trail riding,and other recreational stuff, sure, widening makes a great difference. Loose the oil injection (that's 11lbs off the front end). Don't forget to wear a hydration pack....that was my biggest mistake on my first scramble. An HPD steering dampner won't hurt either. Bust most of all, have fun!!!

I would like to try getting into a harescramble circuit. I live in NE Iowa...what circuts do either of you ride in and what are the rules for racing, requirements...so on. If either of you knows the circuit or could email me a rules sheet, that would be great, I would love to compete in the '03 season with my scrammy 400! Thanks.

I have the Holeshot XCT's on my 2001 Scrambler 400 2x4 and is by far the best upgrade you can probably make if you tried to go out and race on the stock Polaris tire the guys with a real performance tire are going to get the traction and leave you sitting. And as far as not wanting to slide well come out and ride with me sometime I'll show you some serious donuts on anything but a paved road. Racing tip: Traction equals speed.
