WHAT ARE WE DOING WRONG????????????
I thinks it to be a numbers game also. Around here 40 out of 50 quads showing up for a ride are Polaris. With maybe 3 hondas, 1 arctic cat and a token bike or two from the other tribes. Maybe being 90% of the market makes for a higher "issue" ratio.
So far all my problems have been those trees Polaris put in my way, the thin Polaris Ice and the Polaris Rocks I keep hitting.

WHAT ARE WE DOING WRONG????????????
Since I was a kid I have gotten nearly all my "toys" - motorcycles, jetskiis, atv's, gokarts, etc. - very inexpensively from the same kind of people who use this forum to bash Polaris. It is unbelievable to me how many guys think they can take a machine, abuse it unmercifully, and then park it without any thought to maintenance or taking care of it. And an ATV operates in a much harder environment than watercraft or streetbikes or even dirt bikes in most cases (where I ride, the dirt bike guys seem to try real hard to keep those pretty outfits they wear from getting dirty, while us quad guys in our overalls are up to the gas tank in mud!). I've gotten a street bike for $200 because the carb was a little gunked up, and a jetski for $125 because it needed a $25 part. A century ago, back before internal combustion, if you rode your horse hard every day and then just turned him out without proper care and feeding, he would eventually die on you. Well, your machines are the same way. Polaris has some good points and some bad points, so do Hondas and Yamahas and Kawasakis and everyone else. I have been amazed at, the few times I HAVE had a problem with my Polaris, how I can fix it out in the woods with a few simple hand tools well enough for it to get me home. Try that with those electronically controlled transmissions Honda touts.
The thing I see is that, if the whiners would spend as much time doing a little maintenance as they do complaining on the forum, they wouldn't have anything to complain about.
And what's the deal with guys who ride quads and have PowerStoke Fords? Several people mentioned "thedieselstop.com". I've got an F350 myself. Its a guy thing I guess.

KEP-
You have an excellent point about the Polaris being serviceable in the field. I shredded my belt out in Moab last summer. (Look at the "is the SP500 a good workhorse? thread for story) The same day my buddies Honda Rancher decided to stick in 2nd gear while out on the trail. I towed him back to camp where he fiddled around with it the whole day. He spent all day on it, and the both of us spent the entire next day as well. It is all electronic. We finally decided that even if we figured out WHERE the problem was, we had no way of fixing it in the field. One day into a 6 day trip, his 2001 atv was done. I spent a day driving and calling all over Moab, got a cross-reference number for the Polaris to a Napa belt, and spent maybe 30 minutes putting the new one on. I was back in action.

The jury is still out for me on my truck. I traded in my 2000 F250 V8 for a 2002 diesel, and I was really expecting better gas mileage. I was sitting right at 15.5mpg until the cold weather hit, now I'm at 13.2. I was really banking on getting 18MPG to justify the cost. My V8 got 8-10 year-round, oil changes were a breeze, 5 grand less, got fuel anywhere I wanted, didn't pi$$ off my neighbors when I warmed it up, ................. I love the torque, but my main argument that I used to justify a new purchase hasn't panned out yet. I plan on running it till 200,000 miles though, so even at 14.2 MPG average, it should come out ahead.
Hey man, if you made my SP600, thank you very much! The first 14 miles have been impressive, I hope to put 30 or 40 more on it tomorrow!
