My '99 Scambler 500 HO started backfiring this weekend and it never would idle good. Prior to this weekend I noticed motor hesitation during takeoff prior to this trip. Any suggestions as to what I should look at?

Scrambler 500 Backfires and won't idle?
Start out with the easy stuff.
(1) run a tank of gas through with carb cleaner additive(poor in gas tank type, not spray can)
(2) install a new plug, properly gapped
(3) bump up the idle with the idle speed adjustment on the carb
(4) new air filter

If the back-fire is when you let off the gas and it wont idle it is the throttle cable ajustment by your hand grip. Mine did the same thing, the cable had to much slack in it and the auto cut off (in the grip) would back fire the motor every time i let off the gas! Adjust the throttle cable so there is little or no free play in the throttle trigger, this should fix your problem.
