well to start off, a while ago my clutch start vibrating and it just got worse and now the clutch went out of it and it will only go bout 15-20 mph in high gear, it did this on my old quad too but without the vibration, anyways i was just wondering if any of you guys had any idea of what may be wrong with it and how to fix all this nonsense.

When you knew that your clutch was vibrating you should have pulled the cover to inspect it and find out what was going on before it gave out. Without you telling us the condition of your belt, the primary clutch, and secondary clutch there is not much info someone can give you other than a guess. I would suggest that you go to your dealer and buy the maintenence manual for your bike, its one of the best purchases you can make and can save you alot of money when you can repair your own machine instead of taking it to a dealer. But for now you need to take off your clutch cover so you can check things out. Its easy to get off, all you have to do is remove your floorboard screws on the side of the clutch, take the bolt out that holds the belt cover exhaust duct, remove the bolts that hold the clutch cover and pull it off. You remove the floorboard screws to make it easier to get the cover off by pulling out on the floorboard. Once you are in there you need to inspect everything looking for any signs of wear, play, or broken parts. After you get a look at it get back on here and let us know what you see and it will happen from there, there are a ton of helpful people on this forum with great information. I just happen to have a 00 Xplorer 400 also and have been all through the clutch, I'm no expert but I'll help if I can. Good luck.

hey skid good news! i tore my quad apart today and the back clutch wheel isnt opening enough for the belt to go down in farther so thats the one thats bad judging from my past exp. with my old quads clutch probs. But i also found that the inner half of the rear clutch wheel (towards the motor) was wobblein a lil so i took it off and found that there was some washers and what looked to be a bearing of some such was torn up so that would probably explain the vibration. well please contact back with any info you may be able to get me, i will probably take the whole clutch wheel into my dealer and have them rebuild it like they did with our previous ones and explain this whole story.

Not real sure why the inner half of the clutch would wobble unless the bushing that rides on the shaft is worn bad. Here is a link for you to look at for a breakdown Driven Clutch Take the snapring off of the back and everything will come apart, there will be some tension on it. When you get it apart check your buttons, bushings, helix and everything for wear. There is supposed to be a washer and a spacer behind the clutch on the shaft. Something has to be broke or worn badly. Good luck. I will add that you will need a good pair of snap ring pliers to get the snap ring off and probably some help. It takes about eight hands to put it back together until you get the hang of it. And one other note, when you put it back together you have to preload it 1/3 of a turn counter clockwise.

ok well i took the whole rear clutch sheeve up to my dealer and they rebuilt it for me and what i think caused the wobble was where the snap ring is, all that stuff was chewed up and broken, only bout maybe half of the snap ring was holding it together so i imagin thats what caused it to wobble a bit i havnt gotten to ride it becuse it wore a small hole on the bottom of the cover so i put some blue silicone on it for now and when the weather warms up i plan to JB weld it together for reassurance so im waiting for that all to dry i wil be able to ride it tommarow night then i will inform u on its progress. i was also ganna ask if the belt that i had on it, if the sheeve was wobbling cud have that worn certain spots on the belt to make it run rough? shud i invest in a new belt?????

A normal (new belt) should be 1.174" - 1.188" wide. A used belt gets worn down on the sides. When it measures 1.125", that is the "wear limit" and it should be replaced. Check the rest of the belt for fraying and worn or uneven spots if you see any of these I would replace it. Depending how long its been on there it may be a good time to replace it and keep the old one for a spare.

The only good web site I know of is Parts land you might find them a little cheaper there but after shipping probably about the same. Generaly I use the web site to get a ball park price on what the dealer is going to want for it and also a parts reference. And you might be suprised what you can find on ebay. If you find any cheap places please get the word out. Glad you got things on the right track, good luck.
