I took off the stock air box on my 99 sport, and installed a K&N. I couldn't be happier with the performance, and the fact that you can clean and reuse it.

The stage 1 RCR kit comes with a very nice Uni Filter which helps increase air flow. It comes with the air box mod if you don't want the whole kit.

The K & N will flow more air than the Uni, and with an Outerwear, will block as much dust as the Uni. I have used K & N's on all of my quads and my pickup truck and the 5.0 Mustang my wife used to own.
Never had a problem, never saw any dust or grit in the interior of the filter, and always made good power.

I tried a unifilter and it didn't fit the air box very well and I noticed some dust in intake so I ended up reinstalling the original. I also take some vasoline and rub some small amount inside the intake so if dust does get in it will stick to it and you can see it. That filter was for my 98 Sport, now I have a 2000 500 Scrambler and i installed a K&N, works very well but the mounts on this one I think are much better than the sport and I think either would work

K&N's with outerwares work fine , and on a flow bench you can't really tell they are there . The problem on a Trail blazer is the dirt is trapped on the INSIDE of the filter. I suppose one could craft a prefilter to go inside of the K&N . But to the best of my knowledge The outerware boys aren't doing it .

P.S. Yes , K&N's flow more air than foam filters.
