Default 400 Carb Question

You might have to do like most when putting on an aftermarket carb and just do away with the kill system and take as much slack out as possible. My bike picked up .2 at the drags from just a stupid thing like adjusting the cable so the throttle came wide open.

Default 400 Carb Question

Hey that brings up another question. I thought maybe my cable was stretched and that was why It wasn't opening all the way and I thought of getting another cable to see, but It sounds like that is common on aftermarket carbs huh? So to do away with the kill system I just adjust it until there is no play? If the slide still doesn't clear the throat does this mean the cable is stretched? If so, Is there any advantage to going to a single throttle cable and doing away with the oil injection? Thanks for answering all of my questions Bubba you are very helpful to alot of us on here. I know something that Is simple to you when asked over and over again gets old, so thanks for being understanding and patient. Hey If you need any home/car audio/video or computer questions I can help alot in that area, but that is a different forum huh? LOL Thanks.

Default 400 Carb Question

I don't care what anyone says, the 38mm carb is a piece of crap. I messed with one for months and the ONLY time I could ever get any throttle response from it was by lowering the needle, but it seized up on me the same day. It was all or nothing. I changed to the 39mm and I was wheelieing up hills immediately.

Default 400 Carb Question

Yeh, I've kind of been thinking along those lines too! It is a good carb I am sure, It is just heck to tune right. If I go on a buying spree again anytime soon I may just get the 39 PWK. But for now I will have to try to get the mikuni adjusted, I just keep crossing my fingers and watching the EGT gauge and hoping I don't hear that sound I heard last summer of the piston skirt flying out of my pipe at high speed. LOL

Default 400 Carb Question

I am forced to agree with Kevin that the 39pwk is superior in every way. Like I said just take it easy and only do one or two small things at a time and recheck. It will get right sometime. I unplugged the throttle kill assy and did away with it. With all the mods you have I would consider doing away with the oil injection and premixing it. I always say that's better when dealing with an aftermarket carb. Keep in mind when you do that the jetting will go just a touch leaner, because the oil takes the place of some of the fuel when premixed.Bubba

Default 400 Carb Question

I don't understand what throttle kill assy. you are talking about? The switch on the left of the handlebar or the assy inside of the throttle housing? Confused? Help? I guess I will keep messin' with the mikuni until I can sell It to somebody and get a PWK. Oh well, live and learn huh? Thanks.

Default 400 Carb Question

I just typed a huge post and it just disappeared. I don't have the time to do it all over again.

I have played a little on these TM carbs. Never with a 38 but they are all basically the same. Yes, they are a major pain to get set-up correctly. Take your time and when in doubt go with richer.

I run a TM34 on my 300. My pilot is a 15. How's that for small? I started out with a 50. I have a small "dead" spot from just off idle to about 1/8 throttle. To correct it in mine, it is either the cutaway(which I can't change) or the needle jet/jet needle set up. It is close enough for me to ride.

As for that "tinny' sound, That is a sign to me that it is going lean. Anytime I've had a customer use that term, that's usually what they were hearing. If the engine cleans up and sounds real crisp and tinny, it is proably lean. Vary the gas to make it go away before something bad happens. Best thing of all, tune your carb so it isn't there.

Default 400 Carb Question

I just bought an Aaen top end pipe from Modquad and put it on my trail bike. This is the first Aaen that I've dealt with, and it has ALOT more tinny sound than the HPD trail pipe or even my CPI race pipe. It really is loud and I am still on the rich side, so dont let that fool you. NC, I am sorry I'm not explainig myself good enough. It's hard to put words on paper sometimes. The assy I'm talking about is the one hooked up to the tumb throttle unit under the throttle cover. It's supposed to kill the motor if the throttle sticks open. I unkhooked the wires and did away with it. Most people that go high performance or especially to a single cable do away with it. I knew the carb you have was giving some jetting fits for people, but i have never dealt directly with one on a bike of mine. Bubba
