Ridding double with kids
#4
I used to use a kids bicycle helmet, Not the best, but better than nothing. I used that until his head got big enuf for a real helmet. They do make some pretty small ones. Not sure what part of Wyoming you are in, but if you are close to a big motorcycle store with parts, they should have some helmets to try on. And just take it extra easy when your kid is on with you.

I've got 2 boys(2 & 4) years of age and when I go to my cabin(in the boondocks) I take both my boys with me on my sportsman I have them sit in front of me and with the sportsman bein a automatic I can still hold them if I need to, usually dont have too though since they know the drill while riding. My 4 year old has actually fallen asleep while riding the 4wheeler. I have gone about 40mph with both my kids with me on the sportsman only cause they always want to go faster. Cant say that Grandma and Grandpa liked the idea when they found out but when they saw how good my boys were riding with me and their mom and how much fun they had they soon stopped whinning. I even take my boys on my 01 Honda XR400 sometimes when I can. I know that my boys love riding 4 wheelers and dirt bikes and if I tell them NO it's hell to pay for me. I bought my 4 year old a XR 50 motorcycle with training wheels that he will start riding this spring. Just have to be cafefull when takin your kids with you on your toys.

PREDATORMAN----Your NOT going to like this, but after reading your post of going 40mph with your 2 young boys on your Sportsman, and admitting that they've also falling asleep while riding, you SCARE the hell out of me!
Im an ATV SAFETY Instructor and this type of riding is just waiting for an accident to happen. Its one thing to be in the back yard riding slow with the kids, its another thing doing 40mph and having them fall asleep on you.I know you love your boys and want them to share your interests, but PLEASE re=think of the consequences that can happen as a result of riding while sleeping and going 40mph with kids?
Sincerly,
Bill

I have been taking both my kids since they were about 2. I have taking them on the quads and the snowmobiles, I always put them in front of me. The only thing is if you stop quick or hit a good rut they might hit there head on the crossbar. Just gotta be real carful. I bought a full face helmet for them just for that reason. The helmet is a ckx they make them as small as xxsmall.

My son just turned 2, and I've had him on snowmobiles this winter. He has fallen asleep on there too. I'm selling my sportbike this spring and buying a Polaris Sporstman. I figure I can take him on it a lot better/safer than on my Ninja. While on the snowmobile, it was hard at times to keep him on. I've seen the harnesses that they sell for riding with young kids. I plan on ordering one of them right away. I holds him tight against me which makes for better stability and generally safer riding. Anyone have any feedback on the harnesses? I can't wait - and he can't wait - to get on that ATV!

I take both my kids with me almost every time I ride. They wear full face motocycle helmet, and ride their OWN quads. Doesn't anyone follow the safety recommendations. Your teaching your kids bad practices right from the beginning. Hope you don't mind trips to the hospital, because as your kids grow up they'll be drunk or high riding double down paved roads with no helmets to get to the next party. An if you dont think that the teen crowd is using AVTs and Dirtbikes to get away from adults to party just take a look at all the areas being closed for just this reason.
So, NOWAY is it OK to teach your kids its alright to break the rule whenever it suits them.
If you want you kids to ride with you and you cant afford quads for them consider selling your big dollar, big bore, 4x4 quads in for something smaller for yourself and buy the kids their own quads. I sold all 3 of my 250r's to get into Family riding. I miss the r's but love riding with the wife and kids even more. By the way I bought my Scrambler used to help stretch the budge.
Also, my son is 6 and wants to start racing. My sister boys who are 11 and 13 have been riding adult sized quads, but just dont have the confidence and skills my kids have. In fact they alway want to ride the kids quads over the adult sized machines whenever they have a chance.
Oh yah, now that the whole family is hooked on riding quads we actually have an annual budget for the quads and the whole family was happy to make "adujstments" so that we could have a annual ATV budget. And yes my kids were involved in this decision - I am also using the ATV's to teach them other values and responsibilities.
Kids like rules, it gives them a sense of security. What you teach them now will stay with them a lifetime.
Do us all a favor, follow the rules.
