Default Ridding double with kids

I'm all for following the rules, when they make sense. My 13 year old, by the rules, is restricted to a 90cc machine. At 5'8 and 140lbs he's bigger than a lot of adults I know. He's also better at handling an ATV. With this in mind, I put him on a larger machine FOR HIS SAFETY. Keep in mind that the kid has received hours of instruction from me on safety issues and rides with my supervision. Basically, though, the "rules" for kids and ATV's don't always make sense.

I'll be honest, though, I don't think I'd take a 2 year old on my machine with me for any reason. I've rolled my Cat with my 9 year old in front of me and though we all came out ok (me, son and Cat) I don't think a 2 year old would have come through this unscathed. This roll, BTW was in an area I've ridden numerous times before and at a low speed. It's the nature of the sport that accidents WILL happen. I prepare my sons for WHEN something goes wrong, not IF.

I used to take my kids with me when they were to little to ride them selves (2-3) but both started riding at 4 yrs old. I had my wife take an old Kidney belt and sew in a section of denem in the back. The kids knew the drill, climb on the front, raise their arms up and they were velcro'd to me! This was very secure and safe in my opinion. If you look around you can find full face helmets, and when we fist got into quads I couldnt find a full face helmet and took a regular one and bolted on a football face mask and painted the while thing PINK for my daughter. The kids did often fall asleep, but I just rode slow, and they were stuck to me like glue.

This is a definate no-no. No-matter how careful one is...anything could happen. If the unthinkable happens...how could one live with oneself?

I have riden my son (8) and my daughter (5) around the yard once in awhile but never have on the trail. Purchased a LT 80 for my son last summer.

The guy (whom I ride with) I bought the LT 80 from has 2 sons he was upgrading his younger ones quad. He spent a lot of time riding double with the older son when he was younger. When he finally put him on his own quad he adapted quite quickly. When his younger son became old enough to ride he got him his own quad and rode double with him very little. It took him many more miles and a longer period of time with a lot more coaching before the younger son became as competent a rider. His opinion was that the kids learn more easily the concepts of body english, throttle control and braking distances ect... while riding double with you (as long as they stay awake lol). Seeing you do it and hearing the engine rpm`s vary during excelleration, braking and cornering helps.

I agree with his opinion, trying to teach my son throttle control is the hardest part. He wants to go as fast as he can all the time.

http://www.jrgraham.com/

is the website that you can order the catalog from. This catalog has a child harness for about $47......the harness is made for the child to sit either in front of you or behind you. I am going to order one since my 3-year old son loves to ride.

Manufactures RECOMMENDED age/cc size areas follows,

6-11yrs old?---69cc or less
12-15yrs old?---90cc or less

These ''recommendations''are pretty much a direct result of what happened[TONS of MISHAPS] on 3 wheelers in the mid 80s.In 1988,the CPSC or Consumer Product Safety Commision reached an agreement[CONSENT DECREE] with the manufactures of ATVs and agreed to stop selling/manufacturing 3 wheelers immediately. The agreement also put forth these ridicules AGE/CC recommendations to basically cover the manufactures from liability?

In allmost every State, these manufactures age/cc ''recommendations''do NOT need to be followed by anyone except sales people. In Michigan, once your child reaches 12yrs old and has an ORV safety certificate,is under VISUAL supervision of an adult while riding a designated trailway, they can ride ANY size ATV you see fit to put them on.

WHEELINforLife---------------A *****??

Its YOUR choice to do what you want on your quad??

I can tell by your post that you are a VERY immature person and young?Just like we have LAWS regarding Vehicles,we have laws regarding ATV use to.Its NOT your choice to do what you want on your quad.

When individules are gettin injured at alarming rates on ATVs,than laws that govern there use will be mandated.Thats to bad, because the ones that suffer are the ones that ride safe/responsable,they have land closed down because of a few inconciderate riders that are causing the problems and getting injured, you sound like one of these?

Grow up and stay in school, you have a LONG way to go!
