Sportsman suspension: Best mods for the smoothest ride
#1
I just did an endurance ride at Windrock, TN. where I beat the heck out of myself with a poor tire choice (run-flats) and worn out suspension parts.
'If' (and I wish it weren't) money were no object and you were trying to get this McPherson strutted, slightly overweight machine to ride even 'close' to an independently suspended 'light' Grizz or Rincon...............................where do you start?
Who sells first-class strut components and (preferrably) the best rebuildable rear shocks for this machine? I'm sure Progressive and Works are in this market; but who does it 'best' and is there anybody out there who simply appreciates a good 'ride' over everything else?(in 2000, this was the only big bore with IRS).
Even if I changed the tires................the Rincon who led our group would walk away from me in a heartbeat on those rocks and 'dips'.
Maybe I just won't be happy until going 4-wheel independant and getting that 'Cadillac' ride I'll always be searching for (ditching 'the belt' wouldn't be half-bad, either).
Thanks in advance if anybody has the time.

From what I hear, Works would definately be your best bet. Maybe some ITP Mudlites too? I would think a more sporty 4x4 tire help. My Bearclaws beat the crap out of me because they are so stiff.
Just throwing some ideas out for you.

kblazk,
I guess I've just never heard tell of a bad Rincon tranny or somebody abusing one to the point of failure; have you? Really would like for someone to explain (technically) the 'manufactured' weak points of this transmission and where catastrophic failures are occuring regularly. Thanks for the advice; just the same.
Offrder15,
I thought that Works might have the bigger 'race proven' reputation of the two and have seen others looking at the Mudlites; but have seen no 'night and day' stories as of yet. Might go with Outlaw radials with the 'lite' steel rims that Highlifter suggests; but again, haven't seen anybody outside of their site that 'raves' about them.
Thanks for the help.

Blackballed, you should be able to get that Sports to ride all right, it's got the right stuff ( IRS ). You might try removing the rear stabiler to allow the rear sus to actually be a true IRS, it's one of the bigest improvments for the 660 griz to get traction & ride. My 2000 Cat has IRS with no stabilizer & it works very very well in off-road conditions. You will get a lot of body roll that you will have to learn to ignore, because it doesn't really affect anything just fells weird.

Thanks sxr6, appreciate you relating your story. I guess I just figured if I was going to 'fix' this thing; I may as well put on the highest quality front and rear aftermarket parts availiable and know I did all I could towards not getting 'beat up' again.
Really hate to say it (and probably 'shouldn't' in this forum) but after seeing those 3 Rincons roll all over those mountains and through the rain, mud and snow at a pretty good clip...........................wouldn't it be a shame to spend $7,000 +; rip off the tires first thing and end up putting on the rebuildable shocks, locker and brakes that it should have come with in the first place?
Stranger things have happened; but it sure as heck aint gonna be 'tomorrow'!

will taking out the rear stabilizer make it more prone to rolling?
