Scrambler Top Speed - GPS
#1
I just installed Polaris Mud Skirts. They almost double the fender surface area (especially the front), so I'm sure they are good for a negative 5 mph.
01 Scrambler 500 4x4 - New, 10 hours
Engine: Stock
CVT Setup: Stock
GPS: Magellan Pioneer
Tach: Polaris Tach/Hour Meter
Temp: 90 Degrees
Elevation: 800-900 FT
Wind: 10-20 MPH
47-52 MPH @ 6250-6300 RPM - Into the wind
55-58 MPH @ 6300-6500 RPM - Cross wind
59-62 MPH @ 6800-6900 RPM - With the wind laying down on the tank
Peak was 62.5 MPH, average was about 58-59 MPH
It's interesting to see the RPM range vs the speed with wind resistance..
Lets get a Top Speed Registry started guys!

Im going up north this weekend. It will be the first ride since the new pipe, clutch kit, and jetting. It will be interesting to see what it will do. I maxed out at about 62-63mph when it was stock. Also got a gas gauge. Il'll try and get some gas mileage tests done too

I'm really glad I made the switch to the Scrambler. I bought the Wolverine without knowing much about ATVs and I never rode anything with an automatic clutch and a manual transmission. I really hated it from day one. I kept grabbing the brake thinking it was my clutch lever every time I would shift. Besides, I almost lost my big foot a few times shifting up when I was over a log or bump.
I really like the Scrambler's CVT, 500cc torque, the full floor boards, the tight turning radius, and the selectable 4WD. I just couldn't justify the extra cost of modifying the Wolverine with these items when I got such a smoken deal on my new 01 Scrambler hold over.
The only thing I don't like on the Scrambler is the small capacity fuel tank and the gas mileage isn't as good as what I was getting on the Wolverine. Guess the CVT is always keeping the motor at higher RPMs so it drinks more gas when your going slow unlike the Wolvy.
I got the Polaris Scrambler gas gauge from Pure Polaris online and I wasn't impressed. When full, it read between full and 3/4 and when it was at reserve on the gauge, I still had 1.5 gallons left. I could pop the cap and look in the tank for a better reading than that junky $16 gauge. Not to mention I don't think it sealed as good as the stock cap.
I really think those Mud Skirts are like Dumbo ears, robbing all my top speed. But they are great for the mud. I highly recommend them!

I got the mud skirts from PurePolaris.com, the ones for the Gen III body (Scrambler, Trail Blazer). They were about $200 for the front and back. They look pretty good, very tough material and they are slightly contoured. You have to drill about 8 holes in each fender to mount them. I'll post some pictures soon. Aftermarket would definitely be cheaper, but I don't think the material is as good.
