scrambler; 400 vs 500
#1
I have to have four wheel drive, speed is also a issue, ive narrowed it down to the scrambler, however i can not decide between the 400 or the 500. does any body have both or has ridden both? any advice?

My opinion between the two would be the 400. It is faster to start with and there are tons of parts to modify it to go faster at a lot lesser price than for the 500. If you want speed and 4x4, the 400 is the way to go!!

in the scrambler/trail blazer department if the need is speed, then the choice is the 400 2 stroke, you'll have low end towing torque for 4x4 riding, good midrange crusing speed, and the top end of a typically 2 stroke madness, this engine beg for horsepower and upgrades....

The 4 stroke may be more appealing to sound, less maintenence in the sense that you won't have to do as many top-end rebuilds. The big downer on the 500 is it is impossible to get to the spark plug without pulling the front plastic and gas tank. Stock they are equal speed. The 500 prob. has a little more low end grunt. But they are great trail machines. Overall I would take the 400 because I have owned 2 and loved them (till the pred came out, but I still love 'em). If you need a top-end rebuild, easy as pie to do yourself. And you can make it much faster for your dollar than a 500 with companies like HPD and Hotseat. Both great machines and you will be happy with either. But the 400 will weigh a little less and can cheaply be made much faster. Good Luck!

i would go with the 4 stroker because of the noise, i don't even think polaris is making the 400 scrammy anymore, i think EPA made them dump it. anyways, go with whatever makes you happiest

They only make a 400 2x4 now. If you want a 400 4x4 then make sure you get a 2000-2002 model. The 400 is very easy to build up to be very quick and if proper maintenance is done then top end rebuilds are rare. I have a friend that has an 96 sport. Never been rebuilt and he just took the top end apart to replace the rings. The cylinder was like new. It still had the factory cross hatches on the walls. He was very **** about maintenance also. This sport still looks great. Washed, greased, and airfilter checked after every ride. The 500 has more low end torque. If you want to pull something slow and easy the 500 would do it. The 400 is snappy. Hard to go slow and easy. Hard call on this one but if the speed and the ease of mods is a concern then the 400 would be the choice.
