Default Steering squeak

I get a squeek from my steering post when I turn. I greased top fitting, no help. I could not find a fitting on the bottom but liberaly doused it with wd 40 to no avail. Anyone know what else I might try or has anyone else had this? It is on a 02 SP500 by the way.

I have the same squeek and I'm still trying to find it myself. Mine only does it when i jack the front end up and move the steering back and fourth.

Default Steering squeak?

Thanks Anchorman. I went out and looked but can find no fitting in the area shown, even ran my finger around where tie rod brackets are welded on, notived the oil tank looks like my friends so looked on hers also but none there either. They are 02 models, what year model is picture from?
Thanks "squeaky"

Default Steering squeak?

That Sportsman is a 98,.... but there should be a lower unit on yours as well, took me a while to find all of mine... a good shop manual is a great tool, even if you can borrow a peek at one @ the dealers just to find it. The WD40 wont work, as it will just spray the outer area instead of getting inside where the contact is being made. Good Luck!, sorry i dont have pics of an 03, but I'll check w/ a bud of mine that has one.

EDIT: Just found this on the web,... you dont have the lower Zerk.... here's the copy/paste
This is the list for my '98. The differences with the new ones are discussed below.
2 - L&R front lower ball joints
2 - L&R outer tie rod ends (not on newer units)
2 - L&R inner part of front control arms
2 - L&R front inner U joints
1 - lower steering post (not on newer SP)
1 - upper steering post
1 - u joint at prop shaft leading to front
1 - u joint midway on prop shaft (under recoil)
1 - yoke joint in prop shaft (also under recoil)
1 - foot brake pedal pivot point
6 - L&R rear lower control arms (2 outer, 1 inner)
6 - L&R rear upper control arms (1 outer, 2 inner)
2 - L&R ends of rear anti-roll bar
2 - L&R rear inner u joints ('98 and older only)
2 - L&R rear outer u joints ('98 and older only)

This totals 32 zerks on my '98! The newer '99s and 00's should have 6 less, totalling 26. The newer units do not have greasable outer tie rod ends (less 2 zerks), and they have dual CV joints instead of u joints on the rear drive shafts (less 4 zerks).
The newest (2001) Sportsman will be missing the one on the lower steering post.
So the way I see it there are 25 on the 2001s.

Default Steering squeak?

Check the top rubber bushings mounts of the front struts. Often they will start to squeak after you have ridden in mud and water. They will squeak when you turn the handlebars.

SurferSam is right on the money. Mine howl like crazy after dirt gets in there. Clean them out really well, then soak them with a good penetrating lubricant. Penetrating lubricant are two really cool words, by the way!

I did not remove the struts but sprayed the heck out of them with "penetrating oil" (WD-40). The squeek did not change thought would make a bit different noise when I done this even if it did not go away. It really sounds as if it is coming from the lower steering shaft. Greasing the top zerk just sends grease out the top of the shaft.

I had the same problem as Surfersam. I disassembled the top of both struts and using a silicone based grease, lubricated the hell out of them.
That fixed it for now. (2nd time in 2 years)
