Default Predator Mods:

I have been contemplating replacing my banshee with a couple of 4 strokes. So I have been checking out the Predator and trying to see what it would take and for what kind of money to get the Predator close to my banshee in hp. Currently my banshee is putting out mid-upper 60's in hp. I talked to superbikeshop the other day about mods on the Predator and because many people seem to be asking here on this forum about mods I will give my case argument on why the Predator is deffinatley miles beyond any other quad.

According to Superbike Shop:

Stock Predator power around 39-42 hp

WB slip on pipe ads only 1.5 hp but more toque spread everywhere

580 big bore kit $350.00 (includes piston and rings, utilizes stock cylinder)
resleeve cyclinder $125-$140.00
Air Force air filter Kit $99.00 after big bore puts you in around low 50's hp.
port and polish 470.00 adds 6-8 more hp
To port and polish you must also put in new valves. $350.00-$400.00 labor-parts.

2-3 weeks turn around time for big bore install
Engineer said they stopped at 580 kit in order to retain quick rev ability. The big bore piston only ways i gram heavier than stock.

Predator Stock price: $5700.00 + $500 for type package deal.
2 Front Resevoirs ($170.00 x 2 = $340.00)

Tiny Tach RPm guage (http://www.tinytach.com/) $40.00

Total = $7269.00 (includes extra 100.00$ for installation and shipping costs, excludes port & polish job.)

So you can see you have a complete big bore Predator which you could make an argument that you could get a Raptor up to the same hp numbers with same amount of money but a raptor would not have near the suspenion, travel and no res. and you must replace the a-arms on the raptor to widen it up enough to compete with the same geometry set-up on a stock Predator.

The Baja DS, Cannondale would not even be close because I believe a stock DS is about the same cost as my Predator w/ above mods not to mention its all stock. The cannondale is close in mods but you cant get even near the same performance for near the price.

The other 400s are cheap but you would have to dump alot more money into the motor to get the same hp as my moded Predator if they could even be bored to that state.

So what you have is a clear winner in bang for buck. For about the price of a stock Baja and less than a Speed you have a completely moded Predator putting out a conservative hp in the low 50's. IF you have the extra 700-800.00 for the port and polish your looking at another 6+8 hp which would put you around 60hp and still retains its quick revability.

FYI!

Don't agree with your choice of shops, but choose the one you want. This machine is opening many peoples eyes. Go buy one, you'll be very happy you did.

Hate to differ with u MOD but I totally agree with his choice of shops especially superbikeshop. Nowone out there even comes close to modding the predator like this shop does and the freindly people in Garys shop including Gary himself is really what makes the difference - unlike HPD who Greatly dissappointed me today in thier customer service and availability in predator aftermarket parts.

Your choice of shops is correct, my Predator made mid 50's power with stock cams and CDI. It will rev faster than any stock bore Predator out there. It runs on 92 octane pump gas. will run all day without overheating. It has a flat monster torque curve that never drops off. With the cams and CDI it produces over 60 HP, and with the small nitrous kit it pushes close to 80 on a conserative dyno. Just remember a stock Predator could only make 31 HP on this same dyno. But you are correct, no matter what kit or shop you go with the Predator will be getting everyones attention very soon, there are alot of them out there now. They are responding well to mods, HI-PER Technology is getting around a 100 hp out of a stock bore Predator with 22 PSI of boost from a turbo.

I could create a raptor much cheaper, also have the ability to power shift without bombing the tranny.

Raptor 6000 OTD
pipe 600 W/k&n proflow
standard bore piston 100 - 150
cam 125 - 150
port job ??? dont need it already got more ponies than the pred you will build

only problem are raptors have, is that they dont come hi-comp piston, and proformence cam out-of-the-box.

total = $6900

as for shocks, axle, and swingarm, the stock is fine. (unless you dont know how to tune, handle, or are a sissy and like an aggressive ride)

I just had to prove your "So you can see you have a complete big bore Predator which you could make an argument that you could get a Raptor up to the same hp numbers with same amount of money" wrong

i am going with the four stroke tech 530 kit , with porting, i chose that over the 580 partly because i didnt want to carve out so much of my cylinder,
i dont know the horsepower numbers on it though, i mainly just want more power on the bottom end.

Modquad, is there anywhere in this area to check the horsepower on an atv? i live pretty close to minneapolis, in somerset wisconsin, its maybe a half hour from Maplewood

Its funny how the Raptor guys get on here and whine because a 500 can keep up with their precious 660. If you have to powershift your ATV, then its too slowww. Thats how I feel about it. By the way ctraptor a stock Raptor costs 6500, not 6000. Lets think about this the first year raptors were the ones that had crappy transmissions. Lets not blame Yamaha's problems on Polaris. Don't whine like a little kid because the predator can keep up with your raptor. The raptors handling is not as good as the predators so don't think you could keep up with a predator on a track. The hi-performance piston and cam on the predator is just an excuse for you to say my raptor can't outrun a predator. You have 160ccs more and can't even beat a 500 in terms of speed. You may like the handling found on the raptor but its not cool to flip over because its too narrow and has a high center of gravity.

CT the only thing you have proved is you no nothing about a Raptor or a Predator. Actually dollar for dollar performance will be close. But you forgot about labor for you build up, and I want to see a 60 hp Raptor with a stock un-ported head, I am sure all the Rappy big bore guys would like to know your secret also. so keep on dreaming about what you could build.

Swen, there are places, but the ones I've used aren't open to the public. I'll do some checking around and see if I can find one for you. I wonder if the PSI folks wouldn't have one they'd run it on for you. CT, they're all good. Ride what you like, it's a great time to be on the performance end of the industry.
