Default Please help with chain tightening

I have loosened all of the bolts surrounding the rear axle of my 2002 scrambler 400 4x4. When I turn the wheel back to retighten the chain I seemed to have more slack in it then when I began. Please how do I tighten my chain. the manual says to stick a punch into the concentric housing what does that mean. Please help I'm working on it rightnow and would like to get this project done tonight.

Yes, you have to use a punch to hold the axle still to tension the chain. Look at the sprocket real close and you will see small holes on the right side. Toward the top of the housing behind the sprocket there will be one hole that corresponds with those holes in the sprocket. You have to stick something through the sprocket and into that hole to hold the axle still, you can adjust for more or less slack by turning the wheels or pushing the atv forwards or back. Don't forget to loosen the brake caliper bolts also. That should do it, tighteh it all up and you are done.

You loosen the 2 bolts on the rear hub, and also the 2 bolts on the rear brake caliper. Then you are correct, insert the punch throught the sprocket, but roll the machine forward instead of back. As you push the machine forward, or roll the tires forward, you will see the chain getting tighter and the inside of the rear hub should also be turning. The chain will become so tight, that you should no longer be able to tighten it anymore. Once you reach this point, back the chain off just a little, and then compress the suspension to make sure the chain doesn't get so tight that you risk snapping it. But with the concentric design which your quad has, you can run the chain pretty tight and it won't be foreced to stretch much. Retighten bolts and you should be finished...hope this helps.

No problem. Polaris manuals are not very clear about anything, I promise almost everyone has that question the first time they do it. Glad you got it done.
