I use the K&N cleaner kit...it is a little pricey, but it goes a long ways!! You could use soap and water to clean, but you should have the K&N filter oil for reinstallment to help keep dirt from passing through! Uni and Twinair have their oils also, but they run about the same price.

I have only used the K+N cleaner and oil. Like Pudjumpr said, Its pricey but does go a long way. I just keep buying the kit with cleaner and oil both in the same box. Now that I have one in my pred. it might not last me so long. Only time will tell.

You can pickup a 3.5 gallon parts washer from Harbor freight for $30 est. fill it with diluted Simple Green, or some other degreaser. I only use that little washer for K&N's. Lasts a long time. You can use a paper towel to periodically skim the oil off the top of the solvent. I normally look for something that's non-flamable. Use to just use a gallon ice cream pail, keep the cover on when not in use.
