I have preferred HJC. Tried on 7 different brands & they felt best & were SNELL not just DOT.

You should really try on different brands. Each brand will fit a little bit different. The HJC helmets are great quality but they don't fit me right. I prefer the FOX line.

I'm also wondering who makes reasonable quality helmets at the best price? As long as it's DOT approved and it fits, the cheaper it is the better for us po' folks. I think I paid $40 for my last one.

Wow, that's cheap!. I never heard of them before so I went to their website and they're about $55-135 for off-road/ATV helmets. I got one helmet from my dealer years ago and don't remember what it is. My newer one is a Mossi. http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=76824

I have found about 140 bucks is what you will pay for a high quality but low price tag helmet.

Actually the DOT rating means nothing....... there is no testing done on a DOT helmet.

You only want to buy SNELL approved helmets and better..... and most SNELL helmets start in the $100-$150 range.... on occasion I've seen them for around $80-90 but not usually less......

FWIW I would not buy anything only DOT rated. Those things are not tested and in that you never know what standard they were held to.

The best helmets are made by Arai, no question about it. They don't even make a helmet that does not meet the World FIM and other insane standards. Also Troy Lee Design makes nothing but high end hemlets, as well as Shoei who only make higher end lids......

But other really nice high end lids are made by companies that also offer less expensive models like Bell, Fox, Thor, MSR, ONE, SIX-SIX-ONE etc......

HJC probably makes the best cheaper helmets.... you can find a SNELL approved HJC helmet for somewhere in the $90 range and under at most shops or most websites....
