If this was a comparison of the 03-08 z they would be more comparable. But right now the z is better efi, liquid cooling. But the 400x is still an awesome quad don't discount it.

the only problem with the 400ex is the plastics, yeah they look good but mud can get caught in all the little cracks between the red and black plastics (or white and black) which is a pain to try to get out.

I just bought the new 09z400 in nov. i LOVE it. I was in your shoes on which on to get. The z is a much better machine , ALOT more newer features and EFI too! And their around the same price range. Z all the way!

Not all that familiar with the Honda version, but we have an older (2006) Z... the first year it came liquid cooled I believe (feel free to correct me if I am wrong guys). It is just a spare bike now, but it has been an awesome bike! Near bullet proof! It has been rolled multiple times, wrecked, rodded, raced hard (mx), and ridden by all level riders. We even modded it about a year ago and we still have yet to have any problems with it. It has been a VERY reliable, tough bike for us... thinking it has a perm. home in our garage.
Just my two cents... not that I know much.
