4x4's are fun the new one can keep up with sport quads and they are awsome on trails.
the suspension is mean, mud boggin is fun knowing that you dont have to get off and push, and most people buy them just for work then on the weekend take them out to play.

You aren't riding the right trails
And how much stuff (supplies) can you haul around on a sport quad?
I was in places this weekend that had 2 big 4x4 utes stuck in mud past the fenders.....I didn't bother trying to follow....but a couple of other places I churned through with the big boys

So. Calif. is sport bike country! We don't have serious mud or snow, so traction isn't as big an issue as SUSPENSION and WEIGHT. You don't want to be bashing big desert whoops on anything but the finest aftermarket sport bike suspension! You don't dig in and grapple for traction, rather you just float along on top and use momentum to your advantage. The best example of the principle is the dunes. A light sport bike just flies along, but a big heavy ute will just dig 4 big holes.
The 4X4 comes into play when the rocks get to big for a sport bike to handle. The 4X4 opens up a whole other world to explore (old bolder strewn mine roads from the gold rush days are my favorite). But, it is a limited world, and only a small part of what is available out here to ride.

I'd like to try some dune riding sometime...

Those lil sports might be fun to scoot in dunes or on minor trails. The would not work well for hauling trees out of the woods for firewood or plowing a few inches of snow out of a quarter mile driveway. Everyone had their reason for buying what they did. I was getting a chuckle out of the sports that TRIED to take some trail with 3 feet of water in places, but being the helpful sort I did not mind going back out in it to tow them through. They do bob in the water pretty well. They were quite courteous and thanked me, had a smoke talked a bit, even let one of them that asked give mine a try, really got a kick out of it. So "lol" if you want but I need and like my bigass heavy utilty quad.

Rook, I grew up in WV! Well, at least until I was in Jr High School. Then I traded it in for Baja!!
I like this topic, because every time someone from around here asks what kind of bike to buy, the easterners are all recommending a monster mud bogger. You would eat everybody's dust all day, and have a miserable time.

Have you ever driven a newer 4x4? Like a Grizzly or Prairie 650/700? They will surprise you, I know my Grizz did!
Why do I have a 4x4 and a sport? I live in South La, you figure it out. I like to hunt. Ever tried hauling a 200lb deer out of the woods on a sport bike? What about a deer stand? Not going to happen.
I can do SO many more things on my Grizzly then I can do on my Raptor. I actually prefer the Grizz. Kinda wish I had bought a new Griz instead of the Raptor, but I have alot of fun on the Raptor
