the R wouldnt need any motor work to whoop a 400ex's @ss in every catagory:
speed
acceleration
handling
less weight

IMO, the R is the quintessential quad package.

though people argue, the R is the bike all others are compared to.

the only area i would want a 400ex over a 250R would be tight, putt putt type trails. most two strokes hate go slow. also the 400ex is slightly better on gas mileage. If your rippin on an R pretty good, and your buddy is on a 400 rippin too, i garrantee you will make more trips back to camp to re-fuel. Twostrokes drink more gas.

What about a 250X with some work done to it.

What are the differences between the X and the R?????

Thanks for the help.

I believe the X is a 4 stroke. A guy I know had a Honda 250 (i think) X. It looked very similar to a 250R, except it was 4 stroke.

Smoothy, here's some quick stats on the 3 quads you mentioned (stock):

TRX250R - 330 lbs / 2-stroke / 30 HP - Racing quad
400EX - 374 lbs / 4-stroke / 29 HP - Mid-level Sport quad
250X - 351 lbs / 4-stroke / 15 HP - Beginner's Sport Quad

All three are completely different quads. Unless you are modding up the 400Ex pretty good against a mildly modded 250R, you'll get spanked.

Yeah, well you can't get too caught up in the dyno-HP numbers you know. I just use them as a rule of thumb, anyway. People never seem to pay attention to the elevation, temp, and equipment (ie. tires) effects on the HP #'s. One guy's 40HP at sea-level is 30 HP up in the mountains. You could probably give or take a few lbs on each machine, too.
