too much shifting i guess .. and probably more expensive to maufacture .. funny tho ain't it? quads are heading away from the 6-speed tranny's while sports cars are all heading towards 6-speed tranny's. Big diff tho is that in the car, you can go from 6th to second nearly as fast as from 6th to 5th .. don't have to click all through the gears ..

Keep in mind that cars are using more gears to better fuel economy and also because 5 and 6 speed auto tranmissions are smaller than 4 speed tranmissions are.

For ATV's, there's no reason to have more speeds. ATV's have high revving engines, so the operating range is about 3K to 9K RPM. That's 6K RPM! Cars have maybe 3K for their operating range.

Also, with 4 strokes, first gear doesn't need to be so low as to necessitate the addition of a 6th gear for high speed riding.

4-strokes are torque motors even if they rev high. Ususally a higher gear ratio can be run either on the sprockets, or the ratio can be higher in the transmission. The 2-strokes generally run the 6 speed as corpsie said to help get things moving quicker.

Are you talking about the YFZ 450? the new Yammi racing quad? If so, then I think you must be starting off in second all the time .. I'm not up on the dirt bikes, but just after having checked .. you're right the YZ450F does indeed have a 4 speed .. But keep in mind it's a lot lighter than a quad and can more easily use 4 speeds with longer gears.

I like the 6-speed on the warrior .. keeps it pulling hard all the way through. It may not be the fastest quad on the block with a top speed around 105-110km/h but it goes from naught to 80km/h in a blink.

i have a 300ex. when i got it {stock sprockets} i knew right awat that i had to switch sprockets. nothin on top. i went with the 14 in the front and a 36 on the back. i still would gear even more but thats all the aftermarket offers. nice tourque sure. but i can CRUISE faster on my 86 200x. i'm sure everyone gets an opportunity to do some all out riding, and i just think that its bunk that 17 year old technology seems to be more advanced than some of the new stuff. i want a new four wheeler bad. and i'm luckily in the position where i can go out and get any one i want. i'm actually thinking v-force hoping that the belt provides an overdrive ratio. DON'T like belts or shafts. and i truly HATE anything without a hand clutch. the warrior, banshee, and blaster were all desighned in the 80's. i think i'll take my $8000 buy a bad-*** 350x motor and find a 250x frame and be done with it.

gearing multiplies torque. my 2 stroke doesnt make a lot, there for, it is a 6 speed. unwritten rule usually designates 4th gear to be direct drive (or very close to it) in my case, its still a little underdrive. powerband seems to be the biggest deciding factor.
