Default 400ex vs. Z/kfx400, and raptor

Hey, right now I am in a tough spot! I want a new quad, and right now, I ride a slightly modded 400ex. My friend rides a new 450r, so I am having alot of trouble keepin up whether we are going down a road, or in trails, he just leaves me in the dust! I would like a raptor, or maybe a z/kfx400, but I am only 14. I am going to buy a truck this summer so I can get a part time job, and my parents are going to help me pay for the truck. I don't know if I should spend the money on a new faster quad now, or in a couple of years. I also wanted to know how all three of these quads compare in power, obviously the z/kfx, and the raptor are faster, but I want something that's scare me a lil bit. I want fairely noticable power gains from the bigger quads, cause it seems that 400ex's are getting old! I had a really nice shee previous to my ex, but traded it because I liked a 4stroke better for trails! So, if you have ever had the chance to compare any of these, your input would be appreciated! Thanks!

Save the money on purchasing a new quad. You have a great platform to start with. The 400ex can be modded to out run the 450r. Getting a 440 kit should cut the gap in the hp department. You can get a good 440 kit for under $1500. The 400ex is one of the best handling quads and it can compete with the newer quads with some mods. With the new motor kit you will be surprised with its performance.

Save your money for a 450 R. Fixing up the EX will help on the trail but a 440 will not outrun an R in a drag. In a drag with a stock EX with a pipe and filter vs a 440 EX with a cam, porting, pipe, filter will only outrun it 2-4 bike lengths with good riders and switching the riders up, up Comp Hill at Glamis, a 300ft or so drag (estimate).

Dunestar, are you sure your seeing a 440ex beat a pipe and jetted 400ex by only 2-4. Could it have been a 416? The 440ex's around here are beating stock yzf450's.

I really don't want to spend anywhere close to 1500 dollars for a 440 kit, when for about 500-1000 bucks, I can sell mine and upgrade to a raptor or z/kfx! I like to keep the motors fairely stock for reliability, and economy. I would also like reverse, cause I tend to get stuck in situations where it's very hard to pull backwards, or turn around! Anybody know how a z/kfx compares to a raptor, stock for stock, average riding?

Get the z\kfx. I raced a raptor, gave him a good run for the money out to a 100yds thats it. Now get us both in a set of woods ill take his money. Add a few mods like pipe,k&n,fcr 41 and things starts to change in a hurry.

I'm kinda leanin towards the z/kfx now! I have yet to ride one, but From what I heard, they are almost as fast, and seem to handle quite a bit better! And, I don't want to go through trannys, and starters, and all of that fun stuff! Thanks, now it all depends on what kinda truck I get to see If I'll have any extra money!

Save your money for a yfz or 450r if you dont want the banshee anymore. After rideing a modded banshee you will probably not like the 400's there all dog's compared to a ported banshee. Just my 2 cents. They aren't even as fast as a stock banshee. Also rideing them gets boreing quick. Trust me i ride my friends piped kfx all the time, and it blows.

At least try to test drive one first, I guarentee you will not be impressed with the power. If you are then buy it.

I'm not going to buy anything before riding it. and I don't want to spend alot of money on something thats not much faster than my 400ex. My friend just got a 450r, and I like it, but I want something with reverse, and I don't need that exact type of quad anyway!
