If your are a begginer, I would get something to shift. You will learn alot that way. But I love my V-Force (yea, it is an auto.....hope that clears things for you).

In the world of ATV's..there are 4 types of transmissions (that i'm aware of)

1. Manual: clutch, gears, just like a 'stick shift' car...this is the kinda that i prefer, makes things more fun
2. Semi Auto: you shift your own gears, but there's no clutch involved...very nice on utility quads.
3. Auto: you have gears, and the quad shifts them for you
4. CVT: continously variable transmission, it uses belts to "gear" the machine up and down during acceleration. Used mostly by polaris. (takes the fun out of it IMO)

No offense to you auto guys but I think one of the greatest pleasures in life is revving an atv the engine, dropping the clutch and spitting roost.

I know the big quads like the v700 could also roost but it's not the same.

I know when I'm blasting up one of these steep WV hills the last thing I want to do is have to worry about what gear I'm in.
No person can shift as quick as a CVT.

CVT doesn't shift gears.

actually yes i do.

maybe it would be called 'gearing' but with a CVT the only real gears you have are reverse neutral and forward.
