trail riding:what quad
#1
ok i am looking to update my quad i currently have a 400ex/and my father has a raptor which i ride when he isent riding,we ride fast smooth trails, no rocks or logs, some hill climbing but not much, i am looking at ethier a 450r or yfz 450 or a raptor maybe a z400, reverse is not a big deal, my main question is how are the 450 for trail riding, i heard the yfz seat is very uncomferable, do they have enough tourque for the trails, i dont relly like the z-400-not enough power and the raptor is a little big to relly throw around, as of right now i am leaning towards the 450 r, ok thanks for the help

i was just at a dealership today and my friend said that the yfz seat was uncomfortable but i didnt really find anything too bad about it...its a little harder than my DVX...but then again its a race quad aint it, you dont do a whole lot of sitting down when your racing

The 450R has a great trail chassis. It is geared tall, so in stock form it is best for fast, more open trails. With some gearing changes, it would be even better. It isn't a technical trail bike, however.

I would test ride both the YFZ and the 450R. You indicated that the z400/kfx400 wouldn't have enough power.
Some say the YFZ is to uncomfortable depending on rider size and the trails you ride. However it is an awesome machine in it's own right. It will handle as well as the 450R and the power difference is nominal.
The 450R is geared very tall in first gear. At the very least you will want to drop the front sprocket down to a 13T. This will let you put around alot more than the stock sprocket would. Any additional mods at that point will help the low end. It is not a bike for technical riding, slow climbing over rocks etc. It can be made that way with mods and additional gearing, I just want to make sure you are informed as best as possible. The 450R will most likely be more comfortable than the YFZ in overall ergonomics, but don't let anyone kid you. The 450R seat isn't near as comfortable as that of a 400ex.
Obviously I am biased towards the 450R, but both machines will have scary power compared to that of the 400ex. Both machines have pretty decent stock shocks and fly quite well. You won't be disappointed with either the 450R or the YFZ.
Hope this helps.
