What would be a good sport quad for woods riding in Montana?

 

Z400 or 400EX

 

Yup the four hundred class............if you want reverse.........dvx, kawa,,,,,,,or the z-400......great woods machines......and of course the 400 ex which has always had the title as a great trail quad.

 

The designation "woods quad" is one of the stupidest that has ever been made. But if you want a woods quad and only plan on riding on wooded trails all of the time then get a Prairie 700. A Z-400 won't pull away from it in tight riding situations. And on open stretch areas the 700 will more than keep up with the sport quads. If you get into muddy or technical situations, the prairie 700 will leave the Z-400 begging for help. Go to a XC race and you will usually see the 4x4 700 prairie pulling faster times than the sport quads. If you want a sportier quad then try the KFX 700 V-force. Also, a big consideration in tight, technical terrain is gear selection and clutch work. With the 700's you never have to worry about that because the automatic tranny is always in the right gear. Just hit the throttle and go. For my woods riding I use my Baja X, I have never been left behind and the width hasn't even been an issue. The only gripe I have is sometimes when I am really tired I could use reverse, But thats what riding is all about.

 

My V-Force is great on the trails just a tiny bit wider than my P700 but sportier. I'm lazy and get tired of shifting on long rides even more if were not flat out rippen. Just gas and go, reverse is a plus, only thing some guys don't like the weight. Big heavy guys like me think the size is perfect. My brother inlaw is small and light he doesn't like the V-Force he would do better on 400. Just the opion of a non-expert. The Prairie is really nice if it is muddy or has lots of downed logs. They get pretty hard on the skid plates of the sport quads.

 

Why ride a 600 lb. monster, when you could be flicking around a light agile 370 lb. machine? That is a whopping difference of 230 lbs. of dead weight iron!

Check Al's cycle in Hamilton. They just took a couple of Z400's in on trade, one of them is real nice and set up with aluminum nerfs, 6 pack rack etc.

 

Baja X in woods!? C'mon man too wide for my tastes. I also agree with the extra weight of the P-700's. Although they are real fun and haul serious A$$!!

 

I have a 2002 300ex and It is realy good for trails. I would have got a 400ex but I wanted reverse and for trail riding let me tell you reverse is nice to have. The 300 may not have as much power as the 400 but I am used to utility bikes so it seems to have alot of power to me. Though I just got it!
