Default Question before buying 89 LT500 "Quadzilla"

My friend is selling is beloved 4 wheeler. It is is great cosmetic shape. He said that is has a shaved head, weisco piston, borgenson reeds, FMF pipe, and alot more I cant remember. He wants to sell it for 1800 bucks. This is going to be a huge step of from a 400ex. Is it alot of trouble to keep up a big 2-sroke?I have heard they foul plugs alot if not driving hard. What kinda power should I expect out of this thing. He jut told me if I get it to be very careful until I got used to it. I was also wondering if parts where hard to find for it. Let me know what you guys would do.

Default Question before buying 89 LT500 "Quadzilla"

Yeah, it will be a GIANT step up from the 400...Hell, my 450 was a giant step up from the 400. 2-strokes are not hard to keep in good condition if you take the proper steps to keep them running well. Just because it is in good cosmetic shape does not mean that the engine is in good shape..
The LT's have sort of been labeled as unreliable even for 2 strokes, but my friends have 250's and 500's and don't seem to be breaking their backs to keep them running. Just look out..It might even be smart to read up on the LT models, or ask about common problems in the forum...What to expect power wise...Well, in a drag race, the 500 will beat a stock YFZ by about 3 bike lengths..at least...Throwing mods on the YFZ, its much closer..I may be mistaken, but I believe that the LT500 is the quickest production ATV..

Reliable or not, the LT500 is definitely a crotch rocket!!

have fun!

Default Question before buying 89 LT500 "Quadzilla"

A guy at work has an almost brand new condition quadzilla. He refuses to sell and has a list of a dozen people who want it if he sells

Default Question before buying 89 LT500 "Quadzilla"

i race my brothers all the time...its about 3 or 4 bike lengths, for whoever said it wasn't...

and once I put my pipe, jetted it, and took off the airbox lid, it was MUCH closer...

yes they're animals, but they're animals that break down every trip

id much rather have my moded yfz built for handeling, and mx, than a crotch rocket that only likes to go straight..

The Zilla can be a reliable quad if you take care of it. One thing is for sure, if you do buy it you will have a very respected and feared machine. I looked at 2 Zillas before I bought my TRX250R but I just had to remain loyal to Honda.
