ok, just wondering what the best all around gearing is on a 300ex. i mainly ride Gravel pits and trails, and like quick acceleration but also like top end too here and there. right now im geared 13/39. just got the fourwheeler, and its my first 300ex, so im not sure if thats stock gearing or not.

I can't recall what stock gearing is, but I am guessing 38/13. I think at 39/13, you should be perfect. You gain a little low end (acceleration), but not at the expense of much top end.

for my chick's 300ex with 20" haulers she's runnin 13/36 gearing, with the smaller 20" tires you need to up yer gearing so you're not pinned in 5th going like 35mph, me n my chich ride dunes exclusively and she can cruise most everywhere in 3rd and get up into 4th when we pick it up a bit on the flats, just a thought, try 20" tires n a 13-36 gearset. unless you're draggin with a 300ex? then you won't notice the loss of bottom end, also that you don't have to rev the engine to he[[ all day helps too. lates, josh.......

I have 20" rear tires and I used to have 13/38 but I was topping out at 85kph and my gears were too short so I changed to 13/36 and It is a awsome differance the bike works soomuch better. The only problem that I have is that I am having a problem getting my chain to fit properly if I remove a link the chain it too tight and with the link in the chain is too loose and that is adj the carrier all the way bowth ways!

Trevor,
How old is your chain, does it have a lot of miles on it? It just seems removing one link should not take you completely out of adjustment, that rear carrier moves quite a bit,if your chain is streched, you may need to replace it, a tiny bit of slop in each link can translate into a lot of slop in a whole chain. Just something to check.

No it's not the chain! I also thought that so I bought a new one and it is the same thing. The thing is you can't just remove 1 link of the chain you have to do then in pairs so the chain will fit back together!

I think I had that problem with one gear combination. They make a 12,13,14 and 15 front sprocket. I would just change the front up or down one tooth and that should take care of your slack problem. One tooth in the front is approx. equal to two teeth in the back. I run a 15/33 on my TT racer. Before it was modified it would pull a 14/35 just fine. I think they are way under geared from the factory.

See ya
Bill
