jetting

What Morewood said is pretty good info, another way to tell that your jetting is on is to take a look at your spark plugs. You kind find charts on this at some local auto stores or online, but the color of the spark plug will tell the tell. What I recomend at some point, if you are on a sport quad is to go to a local shop and get them to dyno your machine, if available. They should tell you after whether you are running to lean or rich and it is nice to know what type of horse and torq you are running and your top speed. Cost me about $25 to get this done might be diferent in your area. Plus if someone is tell ing you it will cost $100 to rejet your quad you need to go somewhere else. provide your own parts and they should only be charging you by the hour and it shouldnt take an hour to rejet the carb.
P.S.- that little plastic thing covering your jet in the carb, you dont need that, you dont have to put that back in there, and in my experience, which is with mostly banshee's and a few 4x4's you shouldn't have to take the float bowl off, be carefull with that you get that thing bent out of place it is not fun to get it back into the right place if you dont know what you are doing

Jetting is easy. You can adjust the fuel to air ratio of the pilot by the screws on the carb. I'd start out backing the fuel screw out 1/2 turn. Then I'd go out 1 notch on the needle jet (or replace it if you do buy a kit). Then I'd fine tune the main jet. I'd also vent or lose the airbox lid.
Lean, if you can cover the vents or partially cover the air filter and it runs better, you're lean (too much air, go up on main).
Rich, turn the gas off and hit the gas. As the carb runs out of full, if it runs better, then you are rich (too much fuel, go down on main).
Extreme lean or rich will cause the engine to miss and backfire. If you can't tell the difference between 2 jets, always go with the larger main. Lean is mean (causes excess heat). Better a little rich. You may be able to reach the main depending on your carb through the bottom without removing any plastics or the carb itself. But you must take it off to adjust the needle.
