Put vents in the lid or better take it off. Replace the stock main with a 110 0r 112 main jet and add a slip on exhaust and it will wake her up. I did this to ours and it ran perfect and much better than stock.

I would add a exhaust and k&n filter and no lid. Any other filter and its not going to help in hp. I think you might be able to use a 400ex carb too which you can help in hp cost as low as $40 off ebay or other forum places. Might want to change sprockets too.

Don't get a FMF a megamax or a slip on. Slip-ons rob power and only make them louder, get a HMF sport series, thats what I am getting, and it is suppose to gain the most power. I also have an UNI filter and mine is bored .20 over. Mine does about 55mph. Also I did a test that with the airbox lid off it doesn't really make it quicker. If you run some octane boost in your gas that would also make it quicker/ faster.

I didn't rejet, but if I did it probably would make a difference. With my HMF pipe that I am getting I will have to rejet. It says re-jet to a 125 keihin round jet. I was wondering what the stock round jet is? Does anyone know?

I'm agreeing with some of the above posters. The big restriction in the exhaust system is that little drinking straw of a headpipe. Go with a full system. I don't have any experience with the HMF on the 250, but I have one on my warrior and it's great. I had a Megamax on my recon and it was a terrible exhaust, i'd go as far as saying it was worse than the stock one. It has a lot, i mean a lot of design flaws.
So full exhaust, good aftermarket filter (k&n or single stage uni), leave that airbox lid off, and rejet it for those mods. That will wake it up about as much as you're going to get while still getting your money's worth. It's not really worth putting a lot of money into beginner machines like these though, there's too many bottlenecks and limitations, like the short suspension travel, small 2-valve head, and shaft drive. Not that the 250ex is a bad machine though, I rode the hell out of that recon for 5 years and ride my brothers 250ex from time to time and still have a blast on it. They're awesome for what they are, a fun beginner machine. Try to make them something they're not, and it's just gonna leave you frustrated and with an empty wallet.

Running Octane boost will give you absolutely 0 more power. The Octane rating of fuel has nothing to do with its power potential, it is only a theoretical number assigned to fuel for its ability to resist burning and nothing to do with its potential energy.
