Running higher octane rated fuel will NOT give you more power, unless youe engine was losing power due to detonation or overheating with the lower octane fuel. Higher octane gasoling actually has LESS potential energy than the higher rated fuel. Higher octane does allow a engine to run detonation-free with a higher compression, which more than makes up for the lowered energy in the fuel. It also raises the boiling temperature of the fuel, helping to prevent vapor-lock and such. I can actually track about a 3/4 MPG LOSS in my car when going to 93 octane.
