I am 17 and my parents dont want me to get a atv. Money is kind of an issue. I am planning on spending plus or minus $3500 for something used. I have good riding experience and want something that has power. I do not know much about types of atv's. I have heard good things about 400cc. I would like to decide on a brand name.

both the 400ex and z400 are great quads...if you check on ebay you can find them both for under 3500..I found my 03 z400 on ebay for 3100 in great condition...
there are alot of threads about the z400 and the 400ex wich can help you out alot.If you want more power and speed go with the z400

 

honda, never had any problems with my 400ex, I don't know anyone with a z so I can't comment on it.

The 400 class machines are a great choice, and you should be easily able to find one in your price range! There are only two, the Honda and Suzuki, and I have owned both. The EX is dead solid reliable, and handles great. I like it for tight trails, becasue the engine doesn't mind being lugged down. The Z is a little more revy, so it like it for faster more open trails and wide open riding.

These two machines are practically clones in terms of geometry (the Suzuki is a Honda knockoff!), but the Z has a faster engine. Both have great handling and great suspension.

 

I have an 06 Z400 and my friend has an 05 400EX both are great bikes. You can't go wrong with either one.
