06 Honda 400EX vs 05 Suzuki L400
Need some objective help, looking at two used bikes appear to be in similar condition both cosmetically, mechanically and hours.
Honda $3200
Suzuki $2500
Trail ride with some open spots, Md. PA & VA out grew 250X but loved it's reliabilty and low maintenance. Got tired of Banshee kick start, no reverse, poor handling but loved power band. Our typical riding had me on the rev limiter the whole time with the 250X seldom got to rev limiter more than momemtarily on the Banshee.
I'm about 175lbs and 5'10"
Read alot of forums on here and there seems to be general concensus Suzuki is more powerful top end, more east to mod and great handling. Some reliabilty and low end concerns. Can anyone elaborate and specifically in comparision to the Honda?
General concensus, Honda is bullet proof reliable, good low end maybe slightly better handling than Suzuki but cons are more expensive to modify to get same speed and lower stock top end. Typically more expensive.
Would anyone that has owned both or ridden both chime in? Am I pretty close, way off or can you add something else for me to consider between these two.

I have owned both.
I like the EX for tight, more technical trails. It's engine has low end grunt, and it will lug down. In a nasty section, I can put mine in 1st gear and just idle on through. Great handling, and a fair bit of hop up potential! Mine is 10 years old and has literally thousands of miles on it (lots of beginners leared a clutch on this machine), and it still is going strong.
The Z's engine likes to rev (but not as much as the 450's or a Banshee for example), and it doesn't like to be lugged. This makes it suitable for more open trails and wide open country. Being water cooled, it is a fair bit faster than the EX and has more hop up potential, but again the EX has the edge on a tight trail. Great handling as well, and probably ultimately as reliable as the EX.
In the end, I kept the EX and got rid of the Z. The EX is a better trail quad, and I already had a 450, so the Z just didn't really have a place in my stable....
