A friend just got a 2000 400 EX. He wants to know what the best pipe is for the bike.He put some skat trak haulers on it and he said that it is not the same bike with the paddles. There is not the feeling of having more than you can handle. Someone suggested changing the front sprocket and also a Web Cam. What do you think? Mostly we ride the dunes.

have your friend read the new products review on the Atv Connection site,https://atvconnection.com/
They seemed to be pretty impressed with the FMF pipe.
As always, my advice in trying to get a particular result is to change only one thing at a time. The pipe & jetting would be my first up-grade, with an air box/filter change next, with another jetting.

Has the throttle been checked? I have heard from a lot of people with the 2000 models since my post about the mis-adjusted throttle that had the same problem I had, In fact very few (if any) of the 2000's that I have heard of were adjusted correctly. The 1999 models didn't seem to have the problem.

Cheap, easy, free HP, we're talking a big difference.... I was planning on a lot of engine mods until I fixed mine, now I am thinking maybe an exhaust and definately front suspension.

The pictures are up,At above address.
Changed needle to dynojet needle set on third notch.May go to fourth.

Main jet is at 165 and still starving for fuel at top end.
Air box lid off.But will drill holes in lid soon.
This is work in progress. Will update.

Going to 170 main jet tomorrow and retest.

Are you having trouble jetting your 400EX with the airbox lid off? The carb. requires vacuum to operate properly, if you leave your lid off there may not be enough vacuum for your carb to work right. I would suggest drilling 8-10 holes in your lid(Use Vent Screens) this will give you better performance and will making jetting alot more predictable, also as a temporary fix you can leave the front clips under the lid, this will allow for more air and I have found it useful when trying to figure out jetting problems, are you sure you are not hitting up against the rev limiter? The 400 will handle more RPM then the limiter allows, get a aftermarket CDI with the limiter modified. Some companies will modifies yours, FST I think will ??

Hey guys,

There is that site GT Thunder which runs dyno tests on the 400. Check out the site. One thing to notice is that there is more horsepower on a stock 400 with the LID ON!

Mine is bone stock except for a larger main jet and a Uni filter. I think the Uni allows more air flow (larger filter area. Almost twice the size.).

I noticed an immediate improvement.

That site also ran some test runs on Pipes and silencers. I don't think that test is totally complete.

My friend just bought a used 99 with an FMF MegaMax. It is louder for sure. A little more snappy maybe. But I don't think it revs out as high.

I advised them to try and jet it bigger and try the Uni in order to get the most out of the pipe.

Thanks for the tips guys.My mecanic and I have been working long hour days and I have had only time to look at the machine on my way to work.I wouldn't try to do any thing to the carb without my mecanic. He,s been building carbs for a long time. But he's in school for updates till Thursday.

We or should I say he plans to attach his RPM meater to it Thursday to find the main jet setting.Or somthing like that I realy don't know. He's gone deeper than I can follow.

I did watch him tune the needle jet,And god the responce matches the 250R.It's instant and smoth. It,s hard to describe.

LRD's spec's for the pipe.
Pilot jet-40
Main jet 150
Needle(stock)5 th from the top.

But the pipe seems to be exceading the jet instructions.

So my mecanic went to.
Needle (DNO 190)set on third notch.
I beleave the Pilot is 40.
The main is DJ 165. So far.
Dynojet Q107.001 stage 2 Kit.

I don't think I'm hitting the limiter,I've taken it up this high before and not broken up the rev's.
