I am lookin to buy a new atv and i am trying to decide wether i chould buy a 2004 yfz 450 with under 40 hrs on it or a 2007 raptor 700R, i ride mostly small pits and short trail, i want a quad that is fast and fun in a sand pit but also works good in the trails and can jump, i am 6 feet and about 245 lbs

You are a bigger guy like me (6'2 220) and thoe both bikes are great you are going to feel more at home on the Raptor. Great play quad! (allarounder) Welcome to the forum!

I think you could really go either way here. Maybe the 700, like dodge said, will make you feel more at home, since you are a little bit heavier than the "key" weight group for 450s that get the most power out of them (usually 210 lbs and under I'd say). Also the fact that you said you will be riding trails, the 700 is a great trail quad. Plus YFZs are usually raced, racing takes a toll on a quad's internal components! And you didn't say you'd be going to any tracks.
I ride a 450 and I am about 6 feet, 190 lbs.
If you are looking to buy used, I'd also consider a Bombardier/Can Am DS650.... they are really well engineered quads but just lost their value really quickly for some reason, you can get them pretty cheap.

The Raptor is the better trail quad, and the YFZ is better for everything else you described.
The YFZ if 50 pounds ligher, and you want "fast and fun" and jumping, so that spells YFZ!

I got the 04'. There is a plug that blocks off where the decompression line went in on the YZF. For sum reason yamaha used a plastic plug. If you buy it immediately order a aluminum one and replace it. It's super easy and can save your engine.

Eh, I disagree. '06 and up had sum great improvements but, the '04 and '05's are still good quads. I see alot, including mine, still going strong.
I mean if it's between a '05 and '07 sure jump on the new one but, guess I'm saying no need to "Avoid" the '04 and '05.
