I am buying a new 300ex and I would like to know the best way to get the engine worn in.

Kiwi_Craig,
I'm sure your reply to Drumm was meant in good humor, and if followed with helpful suggestions would have left no doubt. However, by just leaving it just lay smacks of sarcasm and not in the true nature of help to a fellow rider

Drumm- My suggestion would be to follow the owners manual exactly. Don't listen to the fools that say "Break it in like you want to ride it, FAST". There is no logical or mechanical reasoning behind this arguement.

I would say don't take it much past 1/2 throttle to 3/4 for first tank or two of gas and don't run at one speed too long, vary the throttle. Hope this helps.
