YZ400 Quad---Would you buy it?
#12
I don't think it will be all that bad if or when it comes
After all look what Yamaha has done with
Dirt Bikes YZ400/426F, WR400, YZ125, jurys
still out on the YZ250, last year it ruled
this Year the CR250 is a serious threat.
Road Bikes, in 99 the R6 was it, bike of the
Year in most of the Mags, word on the Street was nothing but Positive also, The R1 was
hot on it's tail 2nd in both the Mags and word on the Street, lest we forget the
venerable V-MAX, one of the 1st and still the
best Sport-Crusier made, The new Victory SC
which I'm sure is a fine Cycle but it's going to
have it's work cut out for it, against MR MAX.
Smowmobiles, with the SRX700 a Eastern company
finally has a top of the line High Performance model.
I don't know much about PWC, but Yamaha seem's to have a very good rep there.
With Quads, I like both my Kodiak and Grizz, handle great for Utility Quads
So they may just turn their attention to
building a Serious Race/Sport Quad, and judging by what they have accomplished in other areas, it may suprise the doubt'rs.
Or then again.
It may not.
They still do
OK
anyway

98 Grizz, 98 YZ400F, 99 YZF-R6, 00 Kodiak
Can't wait to try out the DS650 and the Rubicon.

No, disrespect to your posting, D.E.
But I must disagree, the YZF-R6 in the Bike
of the Year throughly ran away from Honda
600 F-4, actually the Slowest laps were
Posted by the Hayabusa and the F-4, the Quickest by the R-6 and R-1, these results were Quite consistent in all the Motorcycle
Mags.
The YZF400/426 is known for it's handling,
as too The SRX700, the fact that it competes
with others Top Hi-Po 800's, says it just cannot win on sheer Muscle alone, although it
has as much as most of them.
My Grizz and Kodiak, I feel are Excellent
Handling rides, esp the Grizz! I could
care less about a Super Plush ride,
I like the feedback and balance it gives
me, that stiffness most whine about gives
it an edge at higher(for a Utility) speeds,
The ride is not so harsh as to put me out with Internal Hemorrhaging and/or Acute Spinal
Trauma.
Yamaha is known for very good handling in
the Street, Snowmo, and Dirt bike areas, and
I've also heard some persons like the Quads
Handling also, not Dirt Wheels and 4-Wheel
though.
Of course then again with their all too consistant reporting and unbiased nature.
I wonder why.
No I am not saying, the Banshee, Warrior handle as Good as the 400/300EX or the
250R, popular opinion has them as the Best
handling Sport Quads, but in most other classes Yamaha handles as good as any other.
Good Day

Also D.E:
My Girlfriend/future wife/soulmate, who has
little expirence on Quads or Bikes, can
jump on my Grizz and hang with all the other
Utility Quad riders out there.
She also is dose all right on the R6 and 400F, says a lot for them both when a rookie like her can jump on either one and do O.K.
and they still have enough power to satisfy the Pros.
Just read the Deconstructing Daytona
article in Cycle World, A staffer took a
Stock R6, entered it into a Pro-Level
race and still did O.K.
The V-Max blew the V65 Saber and Magna, Kawasaki Eliminator, and the Suzuki contender
into the Backdrop not only on the Merits of
Sheer H.P. alone(although it did have a bit more then those).

I have a '01 YZ426, and if Yamaha can put that motor in a quad that weighs less than 350lbs,ready to race, it would dominate even the cannondale handily. 46+hp and a load of torque compared to a 2 stroke. Don't get me wrong, a big bore R would still be faster. These 426 motors don't have the potential to get a bunch more reliable horsepower, but they absolutely rip in stock form. That would be the same HP as a Raptor with a really good pipe,pro-flow,airbox mods, and dyno-tuned jetting. You just have to get used to changing the oil VERY frequently to keep the major maintenance costs down.

You shouldn't have any problem working on a Dale, you just need to k now how to use a laptop and maybe a meter to adjust and troubleshoot any problems it might have. You already have to know how to use a meter in order to troubleshoot wiring/ignition issues as is. I don't want to start an uproar in here, but here it goes. Yes, the cannondale has had some issues and Cannondale is fully supporting the riders, they even have a partially supported race team. They have made a more advanced and completely supperior quad to anything that you have ever been able to buy and take to the races after it's broken in. On top of that it's made here. It's not very often that you can buy anything with an engine that is the most advanced and have it made in the USA.
If Yamaha and Honda actually produce one of these, it will be amazing. The Z400 will be awesome, but it's likely going to need all of the mods that the others will. 440 bore, Hi-comp piston, pipe, maybe cams and a pumper carb if it doesn't come with one.
By the time you get the motor the way you want it, and get some truly great suspension on it, it will cost what the Dale did and then some, and you will have spent alot of time in the Garage that you could been riding/practicing. The real big issue though is that you will be able to sell the Dale for somewhere near what you paid for it, like a normal quad. Look on Ebay and see what guys are getting for the 16-20K R's when they go to sell them. The 400ex is a great machine, but getting any real power out of them is quite expensive, and they really don't make anywhere near the power of a properly tuned 250R for as cheap. Just my Opinion
