Worth it to upgrade from 300ex to 400ex?
#2
I own a mint condition 93 300EX. I have put a K&N on it, supertrapp ear muffler and pipe and rejetted it (other misc mods too like DG bars, etc).
So, is it really worth it to upgrade to a 400ex or should I put a bit of money into my 300 (like a carb upgrade, raise compression, cam, etc) Probably no overbore for now.
I am stuck here because I want a bit more performance than what my 300ex gives me, but is it useless to spend money on something that might be just a bit better or equal to a 400ex?
Also, what could I expect to get out of my 300ex assuming that it is in perfect condition (low hours, great oem plastic, etc.), and what are the lowest prices that people are gettiing the 400ex's for?

I've ridden a 300EX and own a '99 400EX. In my opinion, the 400EX is much better than the 300EX. It has more power and I like the overall feel of the 400EX better. To be fair to the 300EX, I only rode it for 2 hours at Pismo. It was a fun machine but I think it would get kind of boring after a while. When I went up subtle slopes, I would have to hold the 300EX wide-open in second. The power between the two is amazingly different. The 400EX has great power. Holding the throttle wide-open is a huge adrenaline rush. It hooks-up and accelerates rapidly.
As for price, $900 separates the 300EX and 400EX. I don't think $900 will make a 300EX as good as its older brother. A few hundred dollars in mods will make a great machine better, just not as good as a 400EX.

My perfesional opinion is that the 400EX is a 300EX with a bigger body, better suspension, better handeling, and a better engine. Its pretty much a perfected 300EX! I say go for the 400EX.

The 400ex has electric start. You can't go wrong with this quad. You can putt around or hall a$$. My buddies who ride banshees and 250r's say that it is the funnest quad to ride, and that it don't beat you to death to ride it though whoops and jumps. Its an awsome quad.

Todd,
The final decision is all yours. As the others have pointed out you can spend a few hundred more now and run it for as long as you would like to.
The 300EX responds very well to all of the mods that make it sing and sling it. But it will always be a 300EX, and if your mind is set on the glamor of its big brother then you will never be satisified.
I will go so far as to say that a 300EX is a near dog in the sand. Still plenty of fun but when those two strokes are zinging by it does a head job on ya!
You have a pretty good investment in mods already. None of them will cross over to the 400. So you would get to spend all that money again. and you would.
Remember when the 486 DX2/66 was a real kick A$$ processor? Well it aint any more. Meaning that it really does not matter what you have or what you buy, tomorrow something will pass you and there goes that head again!
Enjoy

if you want my opinion as a racer and long time 300ex rider, stick with your bike.sure the 400ex has more power it does not handle like people may think. sure it is an awsome machine and handles well. but the 300ex can be made to handle much better than the 400ex and can be modified to run right with the 400.there are many more mods you can do to make your quad more powerful.and for more top end try a 1 tooth bigger counter shaft sprocket (front)stock is 14/38. also a 1000 rpm higher rev limiter will help. i run a 15/ 37 gearing and a rev box and i can smoke my friends stock 400ex.this would be a much cheaper way of going faster than spring for a new 400ex.
if you need any other experienced advice you can e-mail me at spookaveli@hotmail.com thanks

I disagree, i used to own a 250X, then a 300EX, now 250R, and have ridden 400EX's. If you would rather have a 4-stroke, I'd go with the 400EX if you can afford it. A 300EX can be made faster than a stock 400EX, mine was. But they don't have near the suspension and a 400EX can be made much faster than a 300EX ever could be. But that depends on how you ride, I only weigh 135lbs, but I ride very aggresively and the 300EX couldn't handle it. I broke the frame in many places, broke a shock, bent the frame, and ripped 2 swing-arms off all with aftermarket shocks on it. A 400EX has more travel so it will hold up better, but it is still a stock mild steel frame, which will eventually crack, but not as much or soon. Not only that, but it will go much faster through the rough stuff than a 300EX, you can have the fastest engine in the world, but without good suspension its worthless if you can't pound through the rough stuff as fast as a slower quad with better suspension.
Good luck with what you do,
Sickman
