Is it worth it?

haha yeah that's definitely true, the trails can be tight. For the most part I like riding on the larger trails that let out onto an old gravel road, etc. But I don't think a 300ex is necessary, I have rode my friends Raptor 250, and I would like a little bit more power than the smaller atvs.

Hey,
i have an 06 kfx400 with k&n filter and fmf powercore4 pipe, jetted. This is a great bike and out of all my bikes i never have a problem with it. very easy to maintain and graet for the trails and big logs and freeriding in fields that i do. i do go off jumps homemade. the biggest i get is about 10 feet, but this is a great bike. The only thing i didn't like is that theres no kick start. The honda has a kickstart.
If i had a chance i would trade my bike for that honda 400ex that you are talking about, i'd do it right away especially with all the aftermarket parts. Honda to me is the best company and has strong oem parts (besides KTM). I have a Honda 04 cr250 dirt bike and nothing ever goes wrong.
But hey, i think it is worth it. If you ride it and like the way it rides go for it.
Just remember that theres always a bike for someone, so if you really didn't like it sell it.

i also have a 08 kfx450 which my bike could kill in a race. and i do ride tight trails that open up to shail pits and fields and then open trails. the 400ex is the way to go

I have rode the kfx's back when they were pretty new. I do like them too, but I haven't found such a killer deal on anything besides this 400ex. I will certainly ride it before I get too serious.
And as for Honda's reliability, My great grandpa bought a 1985 Honda 250 Fourtrax off the lot 24 years ago. The atv is in my garage today, and has outlived 2 generations of my family lol. And not only that, it runs beautifully, better than any modern 250 I have ever riden. I am a firm believer in Honda reliablity.

You can't go wrong with a 400ex. I bought mine new in 2002, runs like day 1. They are a great all-around quad. The suspension is good enough to handle big hits if you decide to hop on the track (I have jumped 60 foot doubles comfortably), but the handling, power, clearance/length x width x height make it a great trail quad. On top of all that, it is backed by Honda's immense reliability.

haha awesome.
i'd love to buy a 250 fourtrax (2 stroke right??) but i got no money right now.
Yea honda is great. If i were you i'd stick with the 400ex
Good Luck

I will be sure to tell you guys if I decide to buy it or not.
2_Strokes_Live_On: No its actually a fourstroke. In 1985 3 wheelers were becoming less and less popular due to the gyro effect in the front wheel, which made the bike almost impossible to turn at even relatively low speeds. So Honda took the Big Red (Atc 250= 3 Wheeler) and changed it from the gastank up to an Atv. (Literally; you can buy the back plastic for a Big Red and put it right on.) If I'm correct, in 1986 3 wheelers were banned from production. So yep thats its story, it was one of the first fourwheelers ever created, and it runs better than new. We have never rebuilt it. It has always been barn/garage kept, and we never have done wheelies or anything with it. So it literally looks like new lol

Hey guys,
I just talked to the gentleman that was selling the 400ex, and the bike sold today, and it wasn't to me lol.
So I guess back to shopping. Thank you for all the great pointers. I'll still be sure to share what selection I make

Hey again,
Well today I became the proud owner of a 2001 Yellow 400ex
I'll give you some of the info about it...
Overview at first glance:
Plastic was in excellent condition
Frame was a little bit worn from riding boots
Tires were worn, but 2 sets (Stock tires and rims, aftermarket tires and rims)
Rear brake doesn't work; at all... may need help with that shortly
*** a small amount of oil is being burned ***
Atv was VERY strong and ran through all gears smoothly
Aftermarket:
K&N filter
White Brothers full exhaust
DG bumper
Tires&rims
Really nice footpegs
Full set of skids, but the dumbbutt that owned it bent the back one to pieces, I have a new one on the way...
Lonestar steering stem
Renthal bars
New clutch/brake levers
and some small stuff...
The guy wanted $2200 for the atv, but said he'd take $1800. After riding it and looking it over, I said I'd give him $1500 cash, out the door. He accepted.
I do have some questions/concerns...
Questions: This atv has an oil cooler, is this stock on all 98-04 400ex's?
10w40 Full synthetic oil will do it, right?
And I should use the same oil for the transmission as the crankcase, right?
Concerns: Ok so it does smoke a small amount (oil smoke). Now the airfilter is stopped up as is the oil filter, the oil is bad, the gas is old, and the jetting is a little off. **I am going to flush out the engine and pull full sythetic oil, change the air and oil filters, rejet, and put 93 octane with some full treatment in there. Is there any chance that this will stop the small amount of smoke? I know, I know, the odds are it needs rings but I am hoping this will help.
So, do you think I got a good deal? Also if you can answer any of my questions/concerns I would really appreate it. Thanks guys! Pictures coming soon...

Guys,
I did all the stuff I mentioned, it still burns oil. Also it makes a ticking noise. I've heard about 400exs doing this before, and I think its something to do with the cam-chain being loose?
What do I need to rebuild this thing? I want to do it right, and it doesn't have to be modified, rebuilding it to stock would be just fine. Please help.
