So I know a ton of different types of quads and quite about about each one. However, this has me unsure. So me and my family went trail riding upnorth today. I rode my Trx 400ex, my brother on his 400ex, my parents on a 2up Can Am, and my brother road my parents sportsman. My parents are going to sell the sportsman so my brother needs a quad, the smaller the quad the bettor for us. I had my brother try my 400ex but he didn't like it. He thought it was super bumpy, uncomfortable, and isent a fan of long rides with a clutch.

So what type of quad is smaller, fast, not that expensive, and a good trail quad?

I keep thinking of sport quads (I love sport quads) but my brother wants something more comfortable.

Seriously though, you're going to have to look hard to find smallish, fast, inexpensive, and comfortable, all in a good trail quad. You can find most of those, maybe everything except inexpensive, or everything except comfortable, in one quad. I'll be watching to see if anyone has a suggestion that checks off all the boxes.

 

How much is too expensive? Its hard to find a small quad that is also fast and comfortable and easy to ride and also not a manual clutch. The Honda 250ex has a foot shift semi-auto but I doubt it would be comfortable to ride. The Yamaha Wolverine 350 4x4 is pretty sporty for a 4x4 atv and is also foot shift semi-auto. Not necessarily very fast though. The newer Wolverine 450 4x4(built from 2006-2010) has selectible 4x4 and cvt auto. I had one once, it was a pretty fun atv. Not fast on top end, tops out at about 50 mph but plenty of low end and mid range power. Not cheap and hard to find used, a good one will be about $3000 used.

 

It's not light by any standard but it is very light handling and surprisingly quick. Am talking about the Can-Am Renegade 500. I know they make a 570 but haven't been on one yet. My son used to keep up quite well with the 700 to 800 class machines unless it was a wide open sprint on a straightaway. Had a pretty comfortable ride too. Not quite as comfortable riding as his Scrambler XP 1000 but better than straight axles I've rode. Can probably get a good deal on a used one too. Drawback is there is no stock rack on the Renegade. There are aftermarket ones that are nice.
